Twins’ bats go silent in series-opening loss to Athletics

   ​Twins hitters couldn’t do anything against right-hander Gavin Williams on Thursday, striking out 11 times in seven scoreless innings, before beating the Guardians 3-1 in 12 innings.On Friday, they couldn’t do anything against Athletics starter Jacob Lopez, either, managing just one hit in five innings against the left-hander. This time, however, the Twins couldn’t crack the bullpen, either.Lawrence Butler and Tyler Soderstrom each drove in a run, and the Twins wasted a quality start from Zebby Matthews in a 2-0 loss to the A’s in front of 26,128 at Target Field.Minnesota managed only two hits and grounded into three double plays against five A’s pitchers.The Twins loaded the bases with three walks against reliever Geoff Hartlieb in the sixth inning, bringing Brooks Lee to the plate with one out. But Jose Suarez replaced Hartlieb and got Lee to send an easy grounder to third on his second pitch, starting a 5-3, inning-ending double play.Austin Martin hit a one-out double off Lopez in the fifth inning but never got any farther. Byron Buxton drilled a line drive right at left fielder Soderstrom, and Ryan Jeffers hit a soft fly to right fielder Butler to end the threat.Lopez (5-4) allowed one hit, walked four and struck out four in five scoreless innings.Matthews (4-8) allowed three hits but walked three and hit a batter. Donovan Walton drew a one-out walk before scoring on Butler sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, and No. 9 hitter Henry Bolte was hit by a pitch to start the sixth before scoring on a one-out single by Soderstrom.The Twins went into the All-Star Game break as the highest-scoring team in the American League, and sixth overall, with a 4.85-run average.
