​Two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Gordon Johncock, a native of Hastings, Mich., died of natural causes on Monday, Sept. 28 at his home in South Branch, Mich., his family announced. Johnson was 90.Johncock won the Indianapolis 500 in 1973 and 1982 and also the Michigan 500 at Michigan International Speedway in 1982. He was the IndyCar series national champion in 1976 after winning 25 races that season. A lifelong Michigan resident, Johncock’s career began at local tracks like Capital City Speedway in Lansing and Berlin Raceway in Marne.He began his USAC and CART/IndyCar career in 1964 when he drove for Weinberger Racing. He ran four races in 1964 and went full-time in 1965.Johncock’s 1982 Indianapolis 500 win was memorable for its closing-lap duel with Rick Mears. He beat Mears by a then-record .16 of a second, the seventh closest finish in Indy 500 history. In 1973, Johncock started 11th in the Indianapolis 500 that was delayed two days because of rain. Johncock led 64 laps and was the winner when rain ended the race on Lap 133.He finished third in the 1976 and 1978 Indianapolis 500s, and he was fourth in 1966 and 1974. In 1977, Johncock was leading A.J. Foyt, the eventual winner, with 16 laps remaining when his car’s crankshaft broke. He had led 129 laps.Johncock made 262 starts during 25 seasons in the IndyCar series. His final Indianapolis 500 appearance was in 1992 after he retired on Lap 60 with engine failure. His 24 starts in the race rank fifth among all drivers, tied with Johnny Rutherford and Scott Dixon. Johncock led 339 laps in the Indianapolis 500, 15th all time.After retiring from racing, Johncock focused on his timber business in South Branch.
