New Milwaukee Bucks guard and Greenfield native Tyler Herro was in Las Vegas on July 10 not only to reconnect with members of his new coaching staff and the Bucks’ newest teammates but also because his AAU squad happened to be in town. Herro officially joined the Bucks following a July 6 trade with the Miami Heat that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. to Florida while Herro and former Heat teammates Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jackūčionis joined him in Milwaukee.
In Las Vegas, the 26-year-old Whitnall High School alumnus spoke with several outlets for the first time about the deal that ended his seven-year run with the Heat. That tenure included winning the 2022 Sixth Man of the Year award and earning an All-Star nod in 2024. It’s worth noting that Herro’s media circuit with Miami came before news broke of a physical altercation he had with former teammate Bam Adebayo; the Heat offered no comment on the incident, and the Bucks did not respond to a Journal Sentinel request for comment.
Herro and Jaquez Jr. are among the four Heat players the Bucks acquired in exchange for Antetokounmpo and Portis in what became one of the summer’s blockbuster trades. The others are Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jackūčionis, alongside a slew of future draft picks. A gallery accompanying the coverage highlights the new Bucks acquisitions, including Herro and Ware, among the four Miami players swapped in the deal.
Despite his success in Miami, Heat president Pat Riley had remained non-committal about extending Herro’s contract for several years. Herro became eligible for a contract extension on July 1, with the possibility of as much as $206 million over the next four seasons. “I saw it coming,” Herro told Miami-based reporters in Las Vegas. “If there’s any summer, it was going to be this summer. So I was very anticipating [of] this. Obviously not knowing Milwaukee, but kind of figured I was gonna get traded this summer. I’m excited and happy it’s Milwaukee.”
On the court, Milwaukee’s front office had been deliberate about assembling a roster that included Herro and Jaquez Jr., though specifics about extensions for the two eligible players were not disclosed during the early discussions. “What that looks like in terms of extensions and next moves and things like that, that’s all the work that’s yet to be done,” Bucks GM Jon Horst said during a July 8 conference call.
Herro emphasized a willingness to understand the change from Miami’s perspective. He acknowledged that Miami’s decision to pursue a championship alongside Antetokounmpo made sense, and he conveyed no hard feelings toward the Heat organization. He also reiterated his plan to maintain Miami as a home base for his family, saying he intends to live there full-time and raise his children in the city.
As the NBA offseason progresses, all eyes will be on how Herro, Ware, Jaquez Jr., and Jackūčionis integrate into Milwaukee’s system and how their contracts and extensions unfold. For fans following the Giannis era in Milwaukee, this reshaping of the roster marks a new chapter, with Herro bringing proven scoring ability and a veteran presence to a team that is eager to contend.
