UCLA lands Nikola Kusturica, its best recruit since Lonzo Ball and a top 2028 NBA Draft pick

The Mick Cronin era at UCLA began with strong momentum: a trip to the Final Four in 2021 followed by consecutive Sweet 16 appearances in the next two seasons. Since then, NCAA tournament results have been uneven, with the Bruins missing March Madness altogether in 2024 and then bowing out in the second round in the subsequent two campaigns. To return UCLA to the upper echelon of college basketball, a significant infusion of talent was required, and that infusion arrived in a major way on Thursday with the commitment of what many regard as the program’s best recruit since Lonzo Ball in 2016.
Serbian forward Nikola Kusturica announced his commitment to UCLA on Thursday, coming on the heels of an electric performance in the FIBA U17 World Cup. He will be eligible to suit up for the Bruins in the 2026-27 season. In seven games at the U17 World Cup, Kusturica averaged 24.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 1.7 blocks, and 2.7 assists on 57.3 percent true shooting, guiding Serbia to a silver medal finish. He was outstanding in the gold medal game loss to the United States, finishing with 37 points and nine rebounds.
Kusturica turned 17 in April, which means he will spend two years in college before entering the NBA. He has been developing his game at Barcelona, where he trains alongside Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, a key figure in Kusturica’s ongoing ascent and widely viewed as the top competition for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2028 NBA Draft.
Physically, Kusturica is a 6’7” wing with elite slashing ability for his size and age. He plays with impressive pace as a ball handler and demonstrates a relentless approach to getting into the paint and finishing at the rim. But his impact isn’t limited to slashing; he also shows a high-level off-ball game, with legitimate three-point volume and well-timed cuts. While his skill set is already impressive, his motor might be the most appealing trait to NBA scouts. He plays with relentless energy, sprinting the floor and crashing the boards aggressively at both ends. His slender frame and youth—he will be among the youngest players in college basketball next season—could limit his physicality at UCLA next year, but his tireless motor should serve him well in both college and the NBA down the line.
To illustrate Kusturica’s impact, here is a highlight reel from the final game of the U17 World Cup, showcasing his scoring and athleticism on a big stage.
Beyond Kusturica, UCLA is embracing an international flavor as it builds its roster for the coming seasons. The Bruins have added depth through the transfer portal, bringing in former Auburn forward Filip Jovic and former Mississippi State forward Sergej Macura. With Kusturica stepping in alongside returning forward Eric Dailey Jr., and guards Trent Perry and Jaylen Petty, UCLA’s likely starting lineup could feature Kusturica at the wing, Dailey Jr. at forward, Perry and Petty in the backcourt, and Xavier Booker anchoring the frontcourt.
Kusturica and Boumtje Boumtje—the latter heading to Duke—could be among the most talented freshmen in college basketball this season, given their ages and the level they’ve already shown. Of course, there will be competition for spots as other projected top players prepare to enter the mix, including 2027 draft prospects like Kansas forward Tyran Stokes, Arkansas guard Jordan Smith Jr., and Arizona guard Caleb Holt. As such, UCLA’s 2026-27 season promises to be a crossroads of youthful talent and veteran leadership, with the potential to redefine the program’s trajectory.
In summary, UCLA’s 2026-27 roster will feature a rare blend of international talent and seasoned contributors aimed at restoring the program to national prominence. The addition of Nikola Kusturica, at 17 years old, signals a bold commitment to a long-term rebuild, while the surrounding roster and coaching strategy under Mick Cronin will play pivotal roles in determining how soon UCLA climbs back into deep NCAA tournament runs and, ultimately, contends for championships.
