Now that we’ve checked out the Top 20 coaches and special teamers in the FCS, it’s time to turn our attention to the defensive side of the ball. The subdivision is loaded with star power on defense this season, even after a wave of big-name players moved on last fall. Expect a linebacker-heavy list this year, though there are plenty of standout defenders on both the front and back lines as well. Here are our top defensive players heading into this FCS season:
Honorable Mentions: James Kratochvil, LB (Marist); Braylon Howard, CB (Cornell); Ethan Appolon, DL (Wagner); Sean Line, LB (Harvard); Kam Sallis, DB (Jackson State).
20. Mirko Jaksic, DL – Dayton
Jaksic earned a 2025 First-Team All-Pioneer League nod and deservedly so. He emerged as one of the league’s best defensive linemen, recording 33 tackles and 6.5 TFLs across 11 games for the Flyers. He also posted two sacks and a QB hurry. Standing 6-2 and weighing 284 pounds, he’s a formidable presence on Dayton’s front and a nightmare for opposing lines. In his two full college seasons, he’s totaled 55 stops and helped his team to 13 wins.
19. Jake Dalmado, LB – Southeastern Louisiana
Dalmado crossed from Nicholls to SLU for the upcoming season, and the move might prove to be the Lions’ best addition. The two-time all-conference performer piled up 101 tackles last year, 50 solo, along with 3.5 sacks and 7.5 TFLs. He enjoyed a standout four-game stretch late last season, posting double-digit tackles in every contest, forcing two fumbles and recovering two more, while also breaking up a pass. Dalmado’s versatility and production will be a major asset as SLU aims to stay competitive in a tough Southland this fall.
18. Michael Wells, LB – Youngstown State
Youngstown State’s defense was under heavy scrutiny last year, but linebacker Michael Wells stood out as a bright spot. As a 2025 junior, he logged 15 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks, finishing with 50 total stops and 11 QB hits. He earned second-team All-American recognition from several media outlets and was a first-team All-MVFC pick. Returning for his senior season, Wells is expected to anchor a Penguins defense trying to reclaim playoff relevance.
17. Cole Taylor, LB – Montana State
A key figure in Montana State’s charge toward a national championship, Cole Taylor established himself as one of the premier linebackers in the country. Thrown into a starting role as a sophomore amid injuries at the position, he delivered with impressive play and growth, becoming a cornerstone of the Bobcats’ defense as they ascended to the top of the national scene.
