UND has added its third goaltender for the 2026-27 season, completing its goalie corps. Alex Scheiwiller, who backstopped the Canmore Eagles to an Alberta Junior Hockey League championship this season, is set to join the Fighting Hawks as the third option in net, barring any unforeseen changes. Scheiwiller delivered a standout campaign with a .921 save percentage for Canmore and earned the AJHL Goaltender of the Year award. He was also named the AJHL playoff MVP, underscoring his impact in high-stakes moments. The goaltender previously committed to Mount Royal University, a Calgary-based institution.
Scheiwiller will slot in behind two established contenders: sophomore Jan Špunar, who was the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s reigning Goaltender of the Year, and incoming freshman Caleb Heil, a seventh-round draft pick of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Notably, Scheiwiller brings dual Canadian and Swiss citizenship; his father, Sandro, is Swiss, and Alex was born in Calgary. He spent the bulk of his junior hockey career in the AJHL with stints in Okotoks, Spruce Grove, and Canmore, including a two-game appearance with Kamloops of the Western Hockey League in the 2024-25 season.
Physically, Scheiwiller stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds, adding substantial size and presence to UND’s goaltending group. The current trio of UND netminders all tower at least 6-foot-2: Špunar at 6-foot-3, Heil at 6-foot-2, and Scheiwiller at 6-foot-2. The program’s roster depth in goal has not featured a transfer goaltender since the 2020-21 season; thus, Scheiwiller’s arrival marks a return to a non-transfer goaltender situation for UND, following last season’s arrangement that included Fargo’s Zach Sandy, a transfer from Minnesota Duluth, who served as the third option.
The history of UND’s third goalie has its notable moments. The last time the Fighting Hawks had a third goaltender active in a regular-season game was January 14, 2023, when Grand Forks native Kaleb Johnson started against Western Michigan University. Johnson later required career-ending hip surgery, which ended that chapter for him. The dynamic behind UND’s goaltending has evolved since, and the 2026-27 season will mark the first time in several years that UND has entered the campaign without a transfer goalie on the roster since 2020-21.
In sum, Scheiwiller’s addition provides UND with a high-caliber, veteran-caliber presence who has demonstrated playoff clutch in the AJHL and a proven track record of strong performance. His arrival, combined with Špunar’s established excellence and Heil’s potential as a top rookie, gives UND a well-rounded and competitive goaltending group as they prepare for the upcoming season. UND fans can anticipate a goalie corps that combines size, experience, and the potential for standout moments between the pipes.
