Manchester United look poised to receive a substantial windfall from the sale of former academy standout Mason Greenwood this summer. The English striker enjoyed a standout 2025/26 season with Marseille, delivering eye-catching numbers, and he is expected to depart in search of a fresh challenge this month. Greenwood harvested 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions for the Ligue 1 side last season, a haul that has drawn interest from multiple clubs. United, meanwhile, are closely monitoring his situation for both sporting and financial reasons, given their potential earnings from his sale. Once hailed as the next big thing to emerge from United’s famed academy, Greenwood’s career trajectory took a detour due to off-field issues, leading to a loan spell at Getafe followed by a permanent move to Marseille in the summer of 2024. United, however, included a sell-on clause believed to be in the region of 40-50 percent, a move widely regarded as a shrewd piece of business that could pay dividends.
This summer, United plan a significant squad rebuild, with midfield reinforcements identified as a top priority ahead of the new season. They are reportedly searching for a replacement for Casemiro, with Atalanta’s Ederson among those tipped to fill the role. In addition, INEOS are anticipated to ramp up their midfield acquisitions, particularly after Manuel Ugarte sustained an ACL injury at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Peoples Person recently reported that United have also secured Chelsea’s Andrey Santos to strengthen the middle of the park. Further signings are expected as United prepare for an intensive 2026/27 campaign, which includes Champions League football, heightening the need to balance the squad with sales to finance the rebuild.
Greenwood’s future has drawn renewed attention amid talk of a move to Fenerbahçe, with reports suggesting the English forward could generate up to £8.5 million from his sale. An update has now emerged on the situation. Journalist Erdem Akbaş, writing for A Spor and sharing information on X, stated that United have already completed the paperwork for Greenwood’s proposed transfer to Fenerbahçe this summer. Akbaş posted: “In the five-part transfer deal involving Marseille, Manchester United, Getafe, Fenerbahçe and Mason Greenwood, only Marseille’s signature is still missing! As soon as that signature is secured, MASON GREENWOOD WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON FENERBAHÇE’S OFFICIAL WEBSITE.” Sport Witness corroborates that Fenerbahçe have set a July 17 deadline to finalize the deal, and they suggest United could receive between €16-20 million, depending on the final agreed fee.
If the transfer goes through as outlined, it would stand as one of the rare financially successful exits for United in recent times, delivering a meaningful return on a player whose value has fluctuated amid controversy. For INEOS and United alike, the sale would not only alleviate financial pressure but also help fund an ambitious summer refresh that could shape the club’s trajectory for years to come. The potential sale of Greenwood remains a focal point, given the club’s broader strategy of leveraging player sales to fund a broader squad overhaul and to maintain competitive momentum in domestic and European competition.
