My Saturday recapped the initial four rounds of the 2026 MLB Draft. In the second round, the Oakland Athletics selected USC pitcher Mason Edwards with the 47th overall pick. Edwards closed the 2026 season with an 8-0 record and a superb 2.07 ERA. He fanned 169 batters, the most by a USC pitcher since Mark Prior accomplished the feat in 2001. More recently, he became the first Trojan to earn first-team All-American honors in 11 years.
Heading into the draft, Edwards was the subject of considerable speculation as a potential first-round pick. While that did not come to pass, he remains the highest-drafted Trojan since 2009. The Athletics, after more than half a century based in Oakland, are currently in their second season playing in Sacramento. However, their long-term plan envisions a move to Las Vegas by the end of the decade, a destination that would likely align with Edwards’s timeline to reach the major leagues should he sign with the team.
The remaining 16 rounds of this year’s MLB Draft are set for Sunday, and it remains to be seen whether any additional Trojans will hear their names called. For ongoing coverage of USC Trojans news, notes, and opinions, follow Trojans Wire on X (formerly Twitter) and like the page on Facebook.
