Utah State linebacker Harrison Taggart was taken off the field in an ambulance after sustaining an injury in the first half of Utah’s 33-0 win over the Aggies. He was hurt in the second quarter trying to tackle Utah Utes running back Daniel Bray.During the play, Taggart’s head hit Bray’s knee, causing the linebacker to remain on the ground for several minutes while EMTs worked to stabilize his head and neck. The surreal events hit hard not only for Bronco Mendenhall and Utah State, but the other Beehive State schools as well.Taggart was walking with a walker on Monday, but remained in the hospital. His road to recovery will be difficult. But his spirits were high, and the scans came back clean, which is great news for Taggart, who will keep working and is regaining strength.“I had a chance to visit him on Sunday, and we miss him already. Just positive news so far, in terms of his recovery,” Mendenhall told reporters this week.Utah head coach Morgan Scalley also made a visit to see Taggart in the hospital. This one hit home for the first-year Utes coach, who recruited the linebacker a few times starting in 2021 when Taggart was at Corner Canyon high school. What many didn’t know until Monday’s press conference is that Scalley went to high school with Taggart’s mom and had ties to his family prior to recruiting him.“Harrison, I know him through recruiting,” Scalley said. “His mom and I went to high school together, so I just wanted to make sure that things were OK, and I visited with the family for a little bit. Harrison and his position coach were there.”Taggart’s injury also hit BYU head coach Kalani Sitake. Taggart played two seasons for the Cougars earlier in his career. He was productive during his time in Provo before exiting Cal and landing at Utah State.“We communicated yesterday,” Sitake said. “Just wanted to wish him the best and a speedy recovery, and just thank him for the things that he was able to do here. Once a Cougar, always a Cougar.”The scary injury with Taggart being down for the length of time he was and being loaded up in an ambulance is a reminder of how violent football is. Those types of moments help put things into perspective. Taggart is expected to be leaving the hospital soon.Taggart began his career at Oregon, where the four-star redshirted before transferring to BYU. He spent two seasons with the Cougars and started 16 games. During his time in Provo, he finished with 97 tackles, one sack and one interception. He then transferred to Cal, where he had 38 tackles and started one game. Another transfer put him closer to home. He was named a preseason All-Pac-12 selection and had 13 total tackles in Utah State’s first two games.More Utah Utes News: Where Utah football ranks in latest AP Top 25 College Football PollFive takeaways: Utah dominates Arkansas 43-10Eric Weddle earns spot in Utah’s Ring of HonorMorgan Scalley reveals when he wanted Kyle Whittingham to leave Utah
