The victory completes a turbulent, but successful, non-conference slate. There was an uneasiness sweeping over Husky Nation as the weekend approached. Fear of defeat wasn’t particularly a factor, but more so, how the victory would look. Another close encounter with an inferior foe would spell troubling news for a team that entered the ongoing campaign with College Football Playoff aspirations. The Huskies had a talent gap large enough that expecting blowout wins over Washington State and Utah State was not unreasonable. UW struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball. The 24-10 victory over Wazzu was great, considering it kept the Apple Cup trophy in town. But it left more to be desired. Still, Week 1 rust is understandable, especially when you consider the difficulty of opening the season against a rival. It was hard to justify the 16-14 win over Utah State. A win is a win, sure. Winning like that, against a severely outmanned opponent, was troubling. Week 3 marked the final weekend of the regular season, where the Husky offense could get away with being pedestrian. So it was highly important that it took advantage of the talent cushion. After two weeks of minimal pulse, the Huskies got back to looking dangerous. UW quarterback Demond Williams had his best showing of the season, torching EWU for 373 yards on 27-of-33 attempts. He threw four touchdowns with an interception. He added 33 yards on seven attempts as a runner. His leading receiver was Dezmen Roebuck, who hauled in nine catches for 121 yards. UW tight end Baron Naone broke the 100-yard mark as well, finishing with two catches for 103 yards. A 75-yard gain did most of the heavy lifting there. Perhaps the most positive takeaway from the game is Rashid Williams’ continued growth. He hauled in two touchdown passes and is giving Williams a dynamic duo to throw to alongside Roebuck. The Huskies weren’t as sharp defensively as the previous two weeks. EWU quarterback Nate Bell’s dual-threat ability provided valuable reps that will benefit the Dawgs later in the season. It’s hard to complain about a defense that only allowed 16 points, which is the season-high thus far. For the first time all season, the Huskies looked like they were having fun on offense. They’ll need to keep the good times rolling against Minnesota at Husky Stadium next Saturday at 8 p.m.
