Joe Mazzulla is the youngest coach in the NBA and if you needed evidence beyond government documents all you need to do is follow him to the gym where he trains MMA. Mazzulla sat down with Ariel Helwani after a training session at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas recently to talk about how he uses mixed martial arts to help him in life and as a coach. The video team also shot some footage of the guy the Internet lovingly refers to as Psycho Joe go through a sparring session with his shirt off and, well, holy crap Joe Mazz is jacked.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementMazzulla hitting and kicking the trainer before talking about how important communication is might be the most Joe Mazzulla thing Joe Mazzulla has ever Joe Mazzulla’d.“I think communication can be distracting,” Mazzulla told Helwani. “I ask Eric [Nicksick] a lot about a lot about what his communication is during the round. It’s probably different for every fighter, but what’s my communication during the game? Whether it’s an individual player or whether it’s the team. There’s a timeout component in communication, but also in-game communication. I think one of the hardest things in coaching is to relay, in a simple way, what you see to the players so that they could see it simply and execute.”You may recall that when asked about fun by a child during a press conference last season he told the child that fun is a “cop-out.” In this interview he tells Helwani that mixed martial arts is a “simulation of a lifelong journey.” There is just no other coach like Joe Mazzulla. Mostly because of the way his brain works, but also because the Celtics coach could totally beat up your coach.
