Vikings Get Surprising Quarterback Proposal Out of Nowhere

By admin — In News — July 11, 2026

The Minnesota Vikings, led by head coach Kevin O’Connell, will head into training camp facing a quarterback competition that has people watching closely. At this stage, the prevailing expectation is that Kyler Murray will be the Week 1 starter, but he will be tested by J.J. McCarthy and Carson Wentz. Murray and McCarthy stand out as the primary contenders for the job, and the outcome of the battle could determine who remains as the starter and who might be considered a trade candidate, with Wentz serving as the veteran backup.
With a crowded quarterback room already in place, the notion of the Vikings adding another quarterback would come as a surprise to many, though it has been floated by some observers. Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports has speculated that Minnesota could become a landing spot for recently retired quarterback Derek Carr should he decide to return to the NFL. Palacios wrote that Murray could request a trade from the Vikings if he loses the competition to McCarthy for the starting role, stressing that Murray is at a pivotal juncture in his career and may not accept remaining a backup. If that scenario unfolds, Palacios suggested that the Vikings could have Carr on speed dial if McCarthy cannot stay healthy.
Ultimately, there is no pressing reason for Minnesota to add another quarterback this season. If the quarterback situation remains unsettled or if neither Murray nor McCarthy proves durable or effective, the Vikings might explore alternatives. Carr, however, is unlikely to be a transformative upgrade for Minnesota. He elected to take the 2025 season off and exited the game after the 2024 season without maintaining elite form. In 2024 with the New Orleans Saints, Carr appeared in 10 games, completing 67.7 percent of his passes for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions. While those numbers are respectable, they aren’t the type of achievements that would compel the Vikings to pursue him this year.
Across his NFL tenure, Carr has appeared in 169 games, throwing for 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions, with a career completion rate of 65.1 percent. Signing Murray in free agency would appear to be the more prudent move to shore up the quarterback room, given his flashes of star potential. Before joining Minnesota, Murray spent seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, appearing in 87 games and posting a 67.1 percent completion rate for 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions, along with 3,193 rushing yards and 32 rushing touchdowns. If Murray can stay healthy, he could develop into a long-term solution for Minnesota, especially at just 28 years old.
If the Vikings cannot make the arrangement with Murray work, McCarthy remains a compelling option at 23 years old. Minnesota selected him with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, signaling a long-term betting on his upside. Before pursuing additional quarterback options, the Vikings would be wise to optimize their current quarterback room through development, health management, and competition during training camp and the preseason. The ongoing situation will shape Minnesota’s approach to the quarterback position and determine whether any outside acquisitions are pursued beyond the current trio.
