Vikings HC hints at health being a major key to their QB’s success

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition has dominated headlines since the team signed Kyler Murray in March, with head coach Kevin O’Connell insisting that the contest between Murray and 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy remains an open competition. O’Connell, who spoke on the Dan Patrick Show last week, also stressed that quarterback health could prove just as decisive to the team’s fortunes as who ultimately earns the starting job as Week 1 approaches. “The two years we had our starter play the whole season, we won 13 and 14 games,” O’Connell said. “We want to try to get back to the standard of having the quarterback position be a driving force behind us winning.”
McCarthy’s 2025 season was marked by uneven performance, with notable improvement in December and January. Yet injuries plagued him, forcing him to miss the second halves of the Week 16 showdown against the Giants and the Week 18 tilt versus the Packers. He was also unavailable for the Christmas Day clash with the Lions in Week 17. If McCarthy had managed to stay healthier throughout the year, he might have sustained a more consistent upward trajectory, potentially developing into a reliable quarterback later in the season. Instead, injuries to McCarthy, along with Carson Wentz’s season-ending absence in October, contributed to undermining the Vikings’ playoff chances well before December.
Murray, for his part, has battled health issues across recent seasons, having played a full slate only once in the past four years. If he can win the job and remain healthy, there’s a possibility he could return to the Pro Bowl-level play he demonstrated in 2021. Even in scenarios where Murray does not recapture his early-career peak, his availability and durability could still help the Vikings contend for a postseason berth. The value of stability and reliability—being on the field and able to contribute consistently—may be almost as crucial to winning games as splashy highlights. O’Connell appears convinced that Minnesota could lean into that stability as a foundational element to regain their footing in 2026.
The overarching theme from the Vikings’ camp is clear: health and availability could be the differentiators that push the franchise back toward success, perhaps as much as which quarterback ultimately takes the first snap of the season. The team’s optimism rests on the belief that a healthy, dependable quarterback—whether Murray, McCarthy, or both—could provide the steadying influence required to get back on track and push Minnesota back into playoff contention. This emphasis on durability marks a shift toward a more practical, long-term view of quarterbacking as a cornerstone of success, rather than relying solely on peak years or flashier performances. As the 2026 campaign approaches, the Vikings appear ready to prioritize health, consistency, and the ability to stay on the field as they determine the next chapter of their quarterback saga.
