Despite enduring inconsistent quarterback play throughout the 2025 NFL season, Justin Jefferson remained a central figure in the Minnesota Vikings’ offense. Although his production did not reach the elite levels some expect, he still delivered a solid campaign amid the surrounding challenges. Minnesota aimed to protect its offensive output from the fluctuations at quarterback, which is part of why they pursued Kyler Murray after the Arizona Cardinals released him in the offseason.
During a July 8 appearance on Yahoo! Sports Daily, Matthew Coller of Purple Insider was asked about Jefferson’s future should quarterback trouble persist for the Vikings this coming season. “The way contracts are structured these days allows Justin Jefferson even more room to request a trade if this doesn’t work out,” Coller noted. “I’m not sure that’s something he would want, but contracts typically spread smaller cap hits in the early years and escalate toward the end, setting up negotiations for an extension.”
“Either you sign an extension with this team and stay long-term, basically locking yourself in—likely a Minnesota Viking for life. I know how much he admires Larry Fitzgerald and the fact that he spent his entire career with one franchise. I think that’s exactly what Jefferson wants. He’s very close with Kevin O’Connell, and they’ve built a strong relationship over the years.”
Last season, Jefferson logged 392 pass snaps for the Vikings, posting an 80.5 overall PFF grade. He caught 84 passes on 140 targets for 1,048 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 12.5 yards per reception and totaled 435 yards after the catch, contributing five drops on the year.
Coller also warned that another difficult season could raise questions about Jefferson and the Vikings heading into the next offseason. “If we’re talking about another year of inaccurate passes, frustration, and not contending for the playoffs, the reality that the best wide receiver in football has zero playoff wins so far won’t be lost on Justin Jefferson,” he said. “That makes this a pivotal year for him and the organization.”
Moreover, Coller highlighted Jefferson’s goal of retiring as one of the greatest wide receivers to ever play, which underscores why the Vikings’ quarterback situation matters so much. The team needs a signal-caller capable of maximizing Jefferson’s immense talent. “He wants to set records,” Coller explained. “He aims to be regarded as the greatest wide receiver to ever play. While Jerry Rice often sits at the top of that conversation, that’s the benchmark Jefferson is chasing. He already has more yards for his age than any other wide receiver.”
In this context, Jefferson’s future remains tied to the Vikings’ ability to stabilize the quarterback position and sustain offensive success. The discussion around long-term contracts, potential extensions, and the possibility of coaching and front office alignment all contribute to a broader narrative about whether Jefferson can achieve his stated goal of legendary status with a single franchise.
