Vote for Ames Tribune Athlete of the Week for July 12-18

   ​The week of July 12-18 saw three high school baseball teams and one softball team from the Ames area compete in postseason competition.The Class 2A No. 2 Roland-Story baseball team advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2015 with a 4-0 victory over No. 10 Pocahontas Area in the 2A Substate 2 championship game on July 14. The 3A No. 12 Norse softball team fell one win short of state on the same day, losing to No. 1 Williamsburg by a 9-2 score in the 3A Region 1 championship at Williamsburg. Ballard and Gilbert both competed in 3A substate semifinal baseball on July 13. The Bombers suffered a 2-1 loss to Boone in eight innings during the 3A Substate 7 semifinals at Slater and Gilbert was dealt a 4-0 loss by defending state champion North Polk in the 3A Substate 2 title game at Alleman.There were several standout performances from area baseball and softball players during the week.Here are the Ames Tribune Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of July 12-18. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.Braden Wallace, Roland-StoryWallace came up clutch at the plate for the 2A No. 2 Roland-Story baseball team during its 4-0 win over No. 10 Pocahontas Area in the 2A Substate 2 title game on July 14 at Clarion.Wallace drove in the first two runs of the game with a single in the first inning. He ended up 2-for-3 on the night.Bowen Benedict, BallardBenedict threw a great game in a losing effort for the Ballard baseball team during its 2-1 3A Substate 7 semifinal loss to Boone in eight innings on July 13 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.Bowen came in for Bomber starter Michael Wiechmann in the first inning and ended up throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings with four hits and one walk allowed to go along with four strikeouts. Reece Blaisdell, Roland-StoryBlaisdell was brilliant on the mound for the Roland-Story baseball team during its 4-0 victory over Pocahontas Area in the 2A Substate 2 title game on July 14 at Clarion.Blaisdell fired a four-hit shutout, going all seven innings as the winning pitcher. He struck out eight batters and only walked one.Matt Zoz, GilbertZoz threw 4 1/3 solid innings as the losing pitcher for the Gilbert baseball team during its 4-0 3A Substate 1 semifinal loss to No. 8 North Polk on July 13 at Alleman.Zoz took the loss after giving up four earned runs on just two hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece. Evelyn Carlson, Roland-StoryCarlson provided a bright spot for the No. 12 Roland-Story softball team during its 9-2 loss to No. 1 Williamsburg in the 3A Region 1 championship game on July 14 at Williamsburg.Carlson drove in both runs for the Norse with a two-run homer during the top of the third inning.Joe Randleman covers high school sports for the Ames Tribune.
