Vote for Ames Tribune female Athlete of the Week for July 5-11

   ​The week of July 5-11 energized regional softball action for teams from the Ames area, as several clubs advanced and others saw their seasons end in close battles. Roland-Story, ranked No. 12 in Class 3A, moved into the 3A Region 1 championship game with a pair of strong performances, posting a 2-0 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden and following with a 13-1 win against Pella Christian. Ames, however, saw its season conclude with an 8-0 loss to No. 10 Des Moines Roosevelt in the 5A Region 3 semifinals on July 11 in Des Moines.
In 4A Region 2 action, Gilbert edged Nevada 2-1 in the quarterfinals before dropping an 11-9 slugfest to Newton in the semifinals. Ballard reached the 4A Region 2 semifinals as well, recording a 6-1 win over Webster City in the quarterfinals before suffering a 12-4 setback to No. 2 Carlisle in the semifinals. Collins-Maxwell’s campaign ended with an 11-5 defeat to No. 3 St. Edmond in the 1A Region 3 semifinals, after the Spartans had defeated North Mahaska 9-5 in the quarterfinals on July 8. Colo-NESCO was eliminated by North Mahaska, 12-0, in the 1A Region 3 first round on July 6.
Several standout performances highlighted the week across area softball, with nominations rolling in for the Ames Tribune Female Athlete of the Week. Readers can vote at AmesTrib.com to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Evelyn Carlson of Roland-Story stood out for the Norse in the Class 3A Region 1 games, delivering a powerful showing in key moments. Carlson was instrumental in Roland-Story’s 2-0 quarterfinal win over Iowa Falls-Alden on July 9 in Roland and their 13-1 semifinal triumph over Pella Christian on July 11 in Pella. She belted a solo homer against IFA, then hammered two homers with three runs and six RBIs against Pella Christian, helping the Norse showcase its power at the plate.
In Gilbert, Johnson delivered the decisive moment in an eight-inning victory over Nevada, driving in the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning during the 4A Region 2 quarterfinal on July 9. Johnson also contributed in the field, recording two putouts in center without an error.
For Ames, Craig provided one of the team’s two hits in the 8-0 loss to Roosevelt in Des Moines, delivering steady defense and contributing in right field as part of a solid defensive effort in a challenging matchup against Roosevelt ace Clara Page.
Sorem of Nevada turned in a competitive performance in the 4A Region 2 quarterfinal, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking one in the 2-1 loss to Gilbert on July 9 at Gilbert.
On the Collins-Maxwell side, Courter delivered a big night at the plate in the 9-5 1A Region 3 quarterfinal win over North Mahaska on July 8 in New Sharon, fueling the Spartans’ advances in the postseason.
This week’s action showcased a mix of impressive pitching, clutch hitting, and resilient defenses across the Ames-area softball landscape, with several teams continuing their postseason push and others rallying for the next season.
