​The 2025 Buffalo Bills season has been written, yet the book remains incomplete. Before we turn our full attention to the 2026 campaign, let’s take one last look in the rearview mirror and revisit our annual study of the Plays That Defined the prior season. Buffalo had just defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a thrilling home shootout and then headed southwest to face the 5–5 Houston Texans. On paper, the Bills appeared to be the stronger team and should have left with the W. As you’ll see below, they had their chances.
The Bills never adjusted to the Texans’ dominant component—its pass rush. Houston racked up twelve quarterback hits, eight of them sacks, and forced seventy yards in losses. Those pressure plays contributed to three Buffalo turnovers. The Bills’ defense did enough to keep Houston to 23 points and only a field goal in the second half. But Buffalo’s offense managed just three points on six post-halftime drives.
There’s nothing quite like a glimmer of hope to magnify a loss. Buffalo opened with a touchdown just over a minute into the game, but for the remaining roughly 59 minutes, the offense wouldn’t score again. Added symbolism comes from two additional facts: the run game was stellar, averaging six yards per carry, and the extra point was missed, a quirk that lingered throughout the day.
About two minutes before halftime, the Bills would regain possession down by four. Rather than trust an offense that had begun to stall, Ray Davis launched a sensational 97‑yard kickoff return for a touchdown. I highlighted this play as a beacon of hope to juxtapose the impending collapse, even though it was a brief spark in a game that would soon slip away. The defense generally held its own, but Houston struck quickly before the half to push the margin back to four.
Among the many sacks to choose from, one stood out as the most absurd, though there were plenty of strong contenders in the mix. This particular sack involved Will Anderson, who tallied 2.5 sacks in the game. It’s a memorable moment that underscored how relentless the Texans’ pressure could be.
What a spectacular play it was. It’s easy to overlook the Bills’ bright spots in a game that yielded little in the way of points, yet some moments carried a sense of inevitability about a comeback that, ultimately, did not materialize. There was also one other unusual stat from this game worth noting: the Bills attempted five fourth-down conversions, succeeding on three of them—an aggressive approach that added to the narrative of a tightly contested battle.
None of the turnovers were exactly earth-shattering, but they all mattered—the kind of turnover that sticks in the memory and begs for an explanation. This game had its share of dramatic plays and telling sequences, and the complexity of the day is captured in these moments that defined the encounter as the season wound down.
