The week of July 5-11 was a bustling period for Iowa high school softball, with regional competition heating up across all five classes. Teams from the Des Moines metro area delivered several thrilling regional showdowns as the season moved toward its closing stages. In 5A, Waukee Northwest, Johnston, Indianola, Ankeny Centennial, West Des Moines Valley, Des Moines Roosevelt, Dallas Center-Grimes, Southeast Polk, Dowling Catholic, Johnston, and Waukee all navigated to regional finals, showcasing the depth and talent of the metro’s softball programs. In 4A, Adel-Desoto-Minburn, Norwalk, Carlisle, and North Polk advanced to regional finals; in 3A, Des Moines Christian and Van Meter earned spots in the finals; in 2A, Grand View Christian reached the championship round; and Martensdale St. Marys moved forward in 1A.
The week also highlighted numerous standout performances from area softball players. The Des Moines Register presented a slate of female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro for July 5-11, inviting readers to vote for the winners, who would be announced at the end of the week.
One of the memorable performances came from Waukee Northwest’s pitcher Sophia Schlader, whose dominance helped the Wolves defeat Waterloo East 13-0 in the 5A Region 1 semifinals on July 11 at Waukee. Schlader stretched four perfect innings, striking out 11 of the 12 batters she faced before the mercy rule ended the game.
Des Moines Roosevelt’s Page was equally impressive in the 5A Region 3 semifinals, spinning a two-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks over five innings in an 8-0 win over Ames on July 11 in Des Moines. Offensively, she supplied a two-run home run for the Roughriders, further contributing to a well-rounded performance.
Norwalk’s Michael delivered a standout all-around effort in the Warriors’ 7-4 win over Lewis Central in the 4A Region 1 semifinals on July 10 at Norwalk. She earned the win on the mound after allowing three earned runs on four hits, while recording 13 strikeouts and just one walk in seven innings. At the plate, Michael went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, underscoring her versatility as a pitcher and hitter.
Cassady provided the offensive spark for Martensdale St. Marys in its 8-0 victory over Ankeny Christian in the 1A Region 3 semifinals on July 10 at Martensdale. Cassady went 3-for-4, scoring two runs, driving in a run, and swiping a base to help fuel the Blue Devils’ offense.
Bird played a pivotal role for No. 2 Grand View Christian in a dramatic 7-6 win over Ogden in the 2A Region 1 semifinals on July 10 at Hoover High School in Des Moines. Bird went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI, and she also contributed defensively with one assist and one putout at third base, finishing without an error.
These performances helped illustrate the breadth of talent across the Des Moines metro and the escalating drama as postseason play advances.
