​The 2025-26 high school year was filled with historic sports moments across all three seasons.State records were broken, state championships won and several Salem-Keizer area athletes carved their names in the history books at their respective schools.There were plenty of memorable moments, but only one can be crowned the best of the best. After 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime weren’t enough to separate the Warriors and Class 3A/2A/1A state final opponent Valley Catholic, the two sides geared up for penalty kicks.Amity’s Eliza Nisly, Haley Miersma, Adie Nisly and Grace Ulloa all made their penalties, but the heroics came from goalkeeper Kylie Wilson. Wilson saved Valley Catholic’s second and third PK attempts to give the Warriors a cushy advantage that proved enough for the win. Wilson was named player of the game as the Warriors claimed their first-ever girls soccer state championship.Cascade football completes perfect season with state final routCascade football stormed through a perfect 12-0 campaign and scored more points than any team in Class 4A leading up to the state championship game. In the state final, the Cougars delivered their best performance yet. By halftime of the contest with Henley, Cascade led 32-0. By the final whistle, the scoreboard at Cottage Grove High School read 52-0. Two-way senior Matthew Hinkle was named player of the game. He caught two passed for 91 yards and a touchdown while rushing in a 2-yard touchdown, too. Hinkle also posted two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss on defense. Senior running back Bryce Kuenzi rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns as the pair were later named Class 4A defensive and offensive players of the year, respectively.
