Wabash Valley to the Pros: Herrin gets win July 2

   ​Keeping extremely busy of late, Terre Haute South High School graduate Tim Herrin earned the win on July 2 for the Cleveland Guardians as they defeated their AL Central rivals, the Chicago White Sox, 6-5. It marked Herrin’s first win of the season, though he took the loss last Saturday when the Guardians were defeated 3-1 by the White Sox. In relief, he worked one inning, yielding a hit and a run while striking out one batter. Then, in Sunday’s 7-6 loss to the White Sox, Herrin pitched 0.1 innings and struck out one. In Wednesday’s 6-5 setback to the Minnesota Twins, he logged 0.2 innings in relief. Through 41 games, all in relief, he owns a 1-4 record with a 3.06 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 32.1 innings pitched.
Herrin, now 29, was selected by the then Cleveland Indians in the 29th round of the 2018 MLB draft. He signed with the Indians and began his professional career with the Arizona Complex League Indians, going 0–1 with a 6.16 ERA across 19 innings. He progressed through the minor leagues before making his major-league debut with the Guardians on April 2, 2023.
Northview graduate Braydon Tucker took the loss for the Class AA Reading Fightin Phils on July 3 as they were beaten 12-4 by the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Tucker started and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and two walks. He now sports a 6-5 record with a 2.89 ERA across 14 starts, totaling 66 strikeouts in 74.2 innings pitched.
Shakamak graduate Braden Scott, who has been with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, had his contract purchased by the Atlanta Braves organization, the Revolution announced on their website Friday. Scott was 5-4 with a 4.00 ERA in 13 York starts this season, leading the league with 104 strikeouts and 81.0 innings pitched, while permitting 67 hits and 32 walks. He also posted a league-leading .226 opponents’ batting average, tied for second with a 1.22 WHIP, and ranked third in ERA. The Braves assigned him to their Class AA affiliate, the Columbus Clingstones, in Columbus, Georgia.
Indiana State alumni continue to sharpen their craft on the baseball diamond as well.
Colin Rea started and earned the win for the Chicago Cubs in a 9-7 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, going 5.1 innings. He allowed seven hits, three runs and two walks while striking out two. Rea is now 7-5 with a 4.75 ERA through 19 appearances, 15 of which he’s started, adding a save and 70 strikeouts in 94.2 innings pitched.
Sean Manaea took the loss for the New York Mets in a 14-3 defeat to the Atlanta Braves last Saturday, starting and lasting five innings while allowing six hits, six runs and a walk with four strikeouts. In Thursday’s 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals, Manaea earned the victory, going seven innings and permitting six hits, three runs and a walk with six strikeouts. Manaea now has a growing body of work to improve his numbers and ongoing contributions at the major league level.
