Walker Kessler Provides Letter to Jazz Fans After Lakers Trade

The Los Angeles Lakers have identified their next franchise center by acquiring Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz during the current free agency period. In the deal, the Jazz sent unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 along with first-round pick swaps in 2028 and 2030 to the Lakers in exchange for Kessler. Kessler, who had just signed a brand-new four-year, $130 million contract with Los Angeles, was confirmed by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
During this offseason, when Kessler was a restricted free agent, he declined a five-year, $140 million offer from the Jazz. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon noted that the contract would have been the largest ever given to a center who has not yet attained All-Star status. After evaluating the situation, Utah concluded that parting ways was the best path forward and elected to swap their 7-foot-2 center for draft capital.

The transition prompted Kessler to address Utah fans with a heartfelt message via Instagram after the trade, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to grow with the Jazz and to represent Utah.
In his Instagram note, Kessler reflected on his journey: “Four years ago I arrived as a young kid with a lot to prove and even more to learn. I’m leaving a better player and a better man, and I owe a lot of that to this place and the people in it.” He thanked the Jazz organization for taking a chance on him from day one, saying they provided a platform that allowed him to chase every dream he ever had, and that he is forever grateful for that chance.
Kessler also spoke warmly of his teammates, calling them brothers and recalling the countless early mornings, film sessions, bus rides, and the wins and losses that cemented their bond. He emphasized that he grew up alongside them and wouldn’t trade a single moment. He expressed appreciation for Coach Hardy and the entire coaching and performance staff, thanking them for challenging him, trusting him, and never letting him settle. He credited them with helping him improve, even through the tough stretches, and affirmed that he is a better player and person as a result.
Addressing the Jazz fan base and the entire state of Utah, Kessler conveyed his deep gratitude, noting how they welcomed him with open arms and made him feel valued as part of the community. He acknowledged the highs and lows they shared and the unwavering support he felt from the fans, vowing that he did his best to give back with every performance. He closed by recognizing the profound impact the chapter in Utah had on his life, declaring that Utah will always be a part of his story.
“The Sheriff” concluded his message with enduring appreciation, signing off to Utah’s fans with a sense of pride and permanence. Following the trade, many fans and observers anticipated how Kessler’s presence would influence the Lakers’ frontcourt and how the Jazz would leverage the acquired draft assets in their ongoing roster-building efforts. This trade marks a notable shift for both franchises as they recalibrate their paths in the evolving landscape of the league.
