WANTED: A new front office to run the next Cincinnati Reds rebuild

We asked. You responded…overwhelmingly.Last week we kicked the question to you about whether or not you trusted the current iteration of front office folk at the helm of the Cincinnati Reds to run the team’s next inevitable rebuild. After all, they sit 9 games under .500 and in dead last in the NL Central at the All Star break, and the same cast that was in charge of dealing away Luis Castillo, Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suarez, Sonny Gray, & Co. some four years ago for the last rebuild is still the one in charge of the flailing club again.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAs it turns out, barely any of you think this group deserves another chance to make the same mistakes.97% of respondents have zero confidence in the current front office to run a rebuild, something that increasingly looks like an obvious need beginning right this very week.Pieces acquired during the last rebuild are already the ones who likely need to be on the trade block. The likes of Spencer Steer (acquired from Minnesota for Tyler Mahle) and Brady Singer (picked up from Kansas City in exchange for Jonathan India) seem like enviable commodities at the moment, with starting pitching depth always needed and a distinct lack of right-handed hitting outfielders a focal point among many contenders.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe more obvious problem, though, is that so many of the pieces acquired during the last rebuild couldn’t be flipped for a bag of balls right now. Christian Encarnacion-Strand long ago got DFA’d after flaming out at the big league level, and Noelvi Marte looks perilously close to the same fate. Brandon Williamson barely has a throwing arm any more at this point, while Connor Phillips can’t hit the broad side of a barn with his. The churn, there, simply hasn’t gone Cincinnati’s way at all.Beyond that, there’s nobody other than Hunter Greene who’s signed long-term. The team couldn’t lock up superstar Elly De La Cruz despite other non-big markets tying down their own stars across the league, and the direction of the roster and team has never looked murkier than right now. There is no clear cornerstone on the roster since the front office couldn’t find a way to cement one.The Castellini family and the minority owners that comprise the group in charge clearly doesn’t seem to have any urgency. They let the front office stick around to make all the draft picks over the weekend, after all. Still, it’s hard to believe there’s been anything close to enough to show for the last time this franchise had to overhaul its roster – one 83 win campaign with no postseason success to show for it – heading into the need for it to happen once again.MLB Reacts is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook.
