Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese won WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and her mom presented her the award in the sweetest way.”I’m feeling great. I’m nervous. I’m happy. I’m excited. I’m proud, and I can’t wait to present this to Angel,” Reese’s mom, who is also named Angel, said in a video released by the team on Thursday, Oct. 1, moments before surprising the three-time All-Star with the award.The star’s mom walked into a team gathering carrying a lovely bouquet of flowers and the Defensive Player of the Year award with the forward’s dog in tow. The moment appeared to catch Reese by surprise, who stayed wide-eyed and with her mouth open as her mom approached. Then, she put her head into her hands as her Atlanta teammates cheered for her.Reese hugged her mom and immediately broke down crying as she was presented with the award. “C’mon!” her teammate DeWanna Bonner said in the background as multiple players clapped. Reese’s mom shared that she was so proud of her and thanked the Dream for their support before a tearful Reese shared some thoughts.”I’m so grateful for you guys. You guys (have) always been there for me and pushed me every single day and I’m so thankful,” Reese said through her tears. “I’m just happy to be in Atlanta, and I just wanna finish this off the right way because I think we deserve it.”View this post on InstagramThis year, the 6-foot-4 forward averaged a double-double for a third consecutive season, anchored by a career-high 16.4 points, 12.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and a career-high 1.8 steals per game, which ranked third in the WNBA behind teammates Rhyne Howard (2.3) and Jordin Canada (1.9).Reese led the league in rebounds and offensive rebounds per game (4.8), while setting new WNBA single-season records in total rebounds (521), total offensive rebounds (206) and double-doubles (32). She also posted defensive win shares of 1.98, which ranked third in the league, and finished top 20 in total blocks (32).“I have the trophy, but I definitely want Jordin (Canada) and Rhyne (Howard) to sign it because I think they deserve it just as much as I do,” Reese said via release. “I’m grateful for Atlanta, I’m grateful for my teammates and my coaches and all the supporting staff that supports us. It’s just the beginning.”The former LSU product received 46 of the 74 votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Gabby Williams finished in second place with 20 votes.
