​Hard to believe, but we are already two full weeks into the local high school football season. That makes this one the third week of the year, where teams can separate themselves into figuring out just how competitive they will be in the conference pecking orders.Each of our local teams is playing on Friday night this week as the Thursday kickoffs are now done. There are some big games on the docket once again and a handful of local programs will be playing games at home.Most are on the road. For a complete schedule of our local teams in action, you can check that later on in this story to see where everyone is playing.Keep grinding — Sturgis heads to EdwardsburgThe Sturgis football program broke a skid last week, picking up a road victory over Battle Creek Pennfield. It was a much-needed win as the Trojans came into the contest scuffling after an overtime loss at home to Coldwater to open the season. Sturgis played well enough in that opener to win, but in the end came up just a single point short to the Cardinals.After a good week of practice, Sturgis got on the bus and played its second non-conference game of the year, upending Pennfield. It was a strong victory for the orange and black, who now find themselves with a record of 1-1 on the year.Next up is the Edwardsburg Eddies. Known for quite a while as a solid program which had great success in the Wolverine Conference, Edwardsburg is once again looking like an impressive force.”Nothing changed this week. This group has never beaten Edwardsburg and they know the challenge in front of them,” Sturgis coach Chance Stewart said. “The kids worked hard this week and we are looking forward to the Eddies.”The Eddies have clobbered both of their opponents to date, beating McBain (55-20) and Jimtown (Ind.) by a score of 55-12. They love to run the rock, lining up with seven guys on the line of scrimmage in front of a full house of backs. The Eddies will run trap, counter and misdirection at opponents, daring them to stay in their gaps and be disciplined on defense.That’s not always easy, especially at the high school level. It’s been the main focus for Stewart and the Trojans at practice this week. Chasing against Edwardsburg often times results in the Eddie tailbacks dashing into the end zone with everyone following them.But to stay true to their keys and play fundamentally sound football, Sturgis will give itself a chance.They also have done a nice job controlling the ground game and time of possession through two weeks. Sturgis wants to shorten the game against its opponents, limiting possessions.
