Weekend Warm-up: With clear mind, Jamal Musiala ready for fresh start at Bayern Munich; World Cup predictions; and MORE!

When Bayern Munich announced the signing of Ismael Saibari, the move still carried a hint of surprise after weeks of rumors, though not because the Bavarians showed interest in the talented Moroccan. Saibari is undeniably a player of significance, yet bringing in competition for Jamal Musiala was at least a little shocking. Even with a roster full of young, gifted talents, Musiala remains Bayern’s jewel and the cornerstone the club has long sought to build around.
Yet the youngster’s form since returning from the catastrophic leg injury he sustained at last year’s Club World Cup has left him feeling limited both physically and mentally. Bayern Munich, seeing how Musiala has looked, felt the need to add a contingency plan and to bolster the kind of high-quality depth that has been lacking in recent seasons. The logic is clear, even if it might serve as a wake-up call for Musiala.
This week, the Germany international underwent surgery to remove a plate from his foot, a decision that had weighed on the attacking midfielder, according to Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk. Musiala was not scheduled to have the plate removed at this stage, but he chose to proceed now so that he could be ready for the start of Bayern’s preseason training camp. It was always in Musiala’s mind to remove the metal plate that had been surgically inserted last summer after his unfortunate injury at the Club World Cup. Falk revealed exclusively that the procedure wasn’t originally planned for this summer. Had Germany progressed further in the World Cup, there would have been no time for this surgery to take place. If the operation had happened later in the summer, Musiala would have inevitably missed the first weeks of preseason training. However, the 23-year-old was determined to be available on the pitch from day one, which is why he opted for the surgery now rather than delaying to winter. The hope now is that he is fully cleared of the injury and can play with freedom in both mind and foot.
For the first time since his academy days, Musiala may feel the pressure to perform—and that pressure could prove beneficial. For too long, Bayern Munich has leaned on Musiala, yielding to his alleged contractual demands and not always giving him a reason to adapt or evolve his game. Now, with expectations shifting and Saibari in the mix, Musiala faces a prompt to grow and refine his approach.
Saibari, though currently sidelined with injury, arrives fresh from a World Cup where he emerged as a breakout star. He is a player in his prime who can make an immediate impact at a big club, and he comes without the burden of knowing he will merely play a supporting role to Musiala in this new Bayern era. This development could be precisely what Musiala needs to spur tangible changes in his game and to sustain his upward trajectory. It won’t be easy, of course, as both players transition into a setting where competition for minutes will be fierce and where the fitness and form of each man will matter most in the pursuit of Bayern’s objectives.
