Sunderland have announced their first staff change of the summer, appointing José Fonte, the former Southampton and Lille central defender, to their backroom team. The 42-year-old ex-Portugal international, who enjoyed a 24-year playing career that yielded more than 900 appearances and 50 international caps, steps into a role described loosely as a “Technical Assistant Coach.” In this position, he will work alongside Alessandro Barcherini and Michael Proctor to support Régis Le Bris in preparing for the coming campaign.
Fonte is best remembered by British fans for his time in red and white with Southampton, where he helped the club ascend from League One to the Premier League. Over seven seasons with the Saints, he made 288 appearances and scored 15 goals. His Premier League credentials were further enhanced by spells with Crystal Palace and West Ham United in England.
After leaving England, Fonte joined Lille in the 2018/2019 season, following his stint at West Ham and a brief period in China with Dalian Yifang. He became a central figure for Les Dogues, logging 196 appearances and scoring nine goals. His tenure in France culminated in Lille lifting Ligue 1 for the first time in a decade, a landmark achievement for the club.
Fonte also has a direct link to the current Sunderland squad through his time at Lille. He captained the Lille side during their Ligue 1 title-winning campaign, with Reinildo Mandava playing to his left. The relationship between Fonte and Reinildo has been highlighted as a notable point, underscoring the leadership and camaraderie Fonte brings. Reinildo later paid tribute to Fonte on social media, posting a heartfelt message after Fonte’s retirement. In Portuguese, he wrote: “Thank you very much, my captain, my brother, my mentor, my source of inspiration. An exemplary professional, someone who always made me mirror myself, try to follow in your footsteps and try to be like you – that is what I always told you and continue to say. It was a massive privilege to have shared not only the locker room but also many laughs.” Such public praise from a highly respected player reflects the positive impact Fonte has had and signals a hopeful start to his time at Sunderland.
Florent Ghisolfi, Sunderland’s Director of Football, commented on Fonte’s appointment: “José joins our coaching team with a wealth of experience as a player at the top level. He will bring that experience, along with tremendous energy, to a technical staff that is already performing outstandingly under the guidance of Régis. We believe those qualities, combined with his strong leadership skills, will add great value to our club as we look to push forward both in the Premier League and on the European stage. We’re delighted to welcome José to Sunderland AFC.”
Fonte’s arrival is interpreted as a clear signal of the club’s intent to strengthen defensive structure and tactical stability. His extensive experience at the highest levels of the game is expected to translate into practical benefits on the training ground and in match preparation. Sunderland fans will be watching closely to see how his presence influences the team’s organization, resilience, and overall approach to both domestic competition and European ambitions in the coming season.
