‘We’ll learn from this’ – USMNT release official statement after World Cup exit

The United States men’s national team issued a statement after their 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the World Cup Round of 16. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad had enjoyed a promising run through the tournament up to that point, but their exit against the European side halted their advance. The performance against Belgium dampened the mood among American soccer fans, turning what had been a buoyant campaign into a disappointment, given the high expectations that accompanied the U.S. as hosts of the 2026 World Cup.
Despite the setback, the USMNT is eager to maintain the momentum gained from the tournament’s early stages and is determined to build toward becoming one of the world’s best teams in time for the 2030 World Cup. In their message to the nation, the players acknowledged the overwhelming support from supporters across the United States, both in venues and at home. It really felt like the American public bought into the sport more than ever before, a surge many attributed to hosting the event.
The statement underscored the significance of what fans contributed throughout the World Cup experience. “Dear America, when we asked, ‘Why not us?’ you answered. You filled stadiums. You brought the game into your homes, bars, parks, and communities across the country,” it read. “Every time our players stepped onto the field, they carried your support with them. Wearing the crest is a privilege, and hearing your voices throughout the tournament is something we will never forget.”
Looking ahead, the team pledged to absorb the lessons from the Belgium defeat, improve, and rise to meet the challenge of competing with the world’s best. “We’ll learn from this. We’ll get better to compete with the world’s best. And we’ll keep doing the work because that’s what this team and this country expect from us…” the statement added.
Even though the United States will not host the World Cup again for several decades, there remains a strong sense of optimism and anticipation for what lies ahead. The national team’s focus is on continuing development, refining their tactics, and preparing for future opportunities on the world stage, with plenty of time to grow ahead of the anticipated 2030 edition. The path forward will involve sustained effort, deeper cohesion, and a continued commitment to engaging fans nationwide as the country looks toward another major national team milestone.
