It’s not just NBA champions Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jaylen Brown who have stepped up; even governors and mayors have joined the push to lure LeBron James. Since his departure from the Lakers, several teams have stood out, making distinct cap-space moves in an effort to sign the 22-time All-Star. Among them, the Cleveland Cavaliers present a storybook-ending scenario, and their head coach is buzzing with anticipation.
“Listen, this is an exciting time for us, right? Like we’re in the mix for the greatest player of all time, my personal opinion,” Kenny Atkinson said on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “So it’s exciting. Like, man, we’re nervous. But we understand how it is. He’s obviously earned that right to take his time. Obviously, family plays a big part of it. But I know the state of Ohio, man, there’s something special there.”
Even during the summer league tilt against the Pistons, the Cavs’ head coach couldn’t hide his thrill about the potential free-agency move. “You guys know there’s a little free-agency thing going on right now. That could be our real jump, and you know what I’m talking about. That’s exciting too.”
There are compelling reasons behind Atkinson’s optimism. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer note that many in the league have a growing belief that Cleveland is the “scenario to beat” in the LeBron chase. The Cavaliers have a natural edge: LeBron James shares a strong relationship with Brandon Weems, a former high school teammate who is now an Cavaliers assistant general manager. Even Bron’s longtime agent, Rich Paul, described Weems as a “big, big, big X-factor” in the pursuit of the four-time NBA champion.
The Cavaliers have reportedly even reached out to brothers Travis and Jason Kelce to help finesse and court LeBron back home to finish his career with the Cavs. With Ohio roots running deep for both the Kelce brothers and James, the Cavs are leveraging every available avenue. On the cap space front, James Harden has declined his player option and is willing to reduce his price to accommodate Bron.
All these efforts are part of why the Cleveland head coach remains excited, but there is a note of caution. The Miami Heat can offer the maximum salary among contenders, close to $7 million, and they are again pitching a Big Three concept with Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Minnesota Timberwolves have also made a public plea, having built a strong starting five with LeBron as the missing piece.
Recently, even Stephen Curry stepped forward publicly to influence LeBron James. “The pitch is, you wanna play good basketball and be around people who know how to play the game? Hopefully, raise our floor and our competitiveness this year.” And Draymond Green, a longtime friend of Bron, recently traveled to Puerto Rico; the 14-year veteran described his “pitch was crazy.”
As the free agency saga unfolds, the Cavaliers’ blend of local ties, strategic courting, and cap-space maneuvering keeps them at the center of the LeBron chatter. For Atkinson and Cleveland, the path to a potential homecoming for James is being paved with high-profile outreach, familial connections, and a compelling case built around Ohio pride and a championship-caliber vision.
