What are the deadlines for World Cup squads?

By Jonty Colman. Un journaliste sportif de la BBC. 27 May 2026. Updated June 12, 2026. Nations competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup had to submit their final 26-man squads by no later than Monday, 1 June. FIFA then formally confirmed the squads the following day, on Tuesday, 2 June. After that deadline, teams are only permitted to make changes under two specific circumstances. The first is if a player suffers a serious injury or illness. This player can be officially replaced in the squad up to 24 hours before their team’s first match of the tournament kicks off. Scotland made a late change to their final 26-man squad, named by head coach Steve Clarke, after Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour suffered an injury in a friendly victory over Curacao. Manchester United youngster Tyler Fletcher was called up in his place. South Korea, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Ivory Coast, Sweden, Austria and DR Congo have also been forced to alter their initial final squads. Once the 24-hour deadline has passed, no further changes are permitted to a team’s outfield players. The only exception is for goalkeepers, who can be replaced at any point during the tournament if they suffer a serious injury or illness. A final squad must contain between 23 and 26 players, including at least three goalkeepers. Like many of their rivals, both England and Scotland selected 26-player squads featuring three goalkeepers.
