Fall training camp in college football is a time of unbridled optimism, with coaches often praising their players and position groups before games officially kick off and begin to reveal whether a team and its components are actually any good.Only about three weeks before his team’s 2026 season-opener against LSU, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney opted for a slightly different approach.REQUIRED READING: Polo Anderson among Clemson football freshmen who could make impact in 2026When asked during a news conference on Tuesday, Aug. 11 whether any players had stood out or surprised him with their improvement from earlier in the year until now, Swinney declined to single anyone out and instead used a different phrase to describe his team.“Everybody’s just working,” he said. “This is a bunch of nobodies. We’ll see. We’ll see if anybody becomes somebody as we play some games.”“Bunch of nobodies.”Dabo Swinney is sticking with the “no starters” mindset he brought into preseason camp, making it clear the competition remains wide open across the @ClemsonFB roster.More: https://t.co/jXd4aHiEAHpic.twitter.com/UxKcw9C86n— FOX Carolina News (@foxcarolinanews) August 12, 2026The Tigers’ longtime coach wasn’t putting down his players, choosing instead to note that plenty of work needs to get done — and actual games need to be played — before someone can truly establish themselves as a difference-maker.Though it’s not nearly as loaded as some of the College Football Playoff and national championship teams from earlier in Swinney’s tenure, Clemson has some talent on its roster. The Tigers had four players on the preseason All-ACC first team, including three on defense: defensive end Will Heldt, linebacker Sammy Brown and cornerback Ashton Hampton. Brown (sixth) and Heldt (eighth) both finished among the top nine players in voting for preseason ACC player of the year, an honor that went to Miami quarterback Darian Mensah. The Tigers enter the upcoming season with some doubts, though. Last season, they finished just 7-6, their fewest wins in a season since 2010, after being No. 6 nationally in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. They were picked fourth in the ACC preseason poll this year, putting them behind, in order, Miami, SMU and Louisville.“We’ve got a mature group with a bunch of competition,” Swinney said on Tuesday. “We’ve got some nice veteran guys that, you know, really care. And then we’ve got some good young talent that’s getting better.”This article originally appeared on Greenville News: What Dabo Swinney meant when he called 2026 Clemson team ‘a bunch of nobodies’
