What is the outlook for Titans’ rookie Carnell Tate in 2026?

The Tennessee Titans addressed a significant roster need in the 2026 NFL Draft by selecting Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate with the No. 4 overall pick. With quarterback Cam Ward entering his second season, Tennessee was in search of a dependable pass catcher to pair with Calvin Ridley. Wan’Dale Robinson adds versatility in the slot, but Tate’s arrival helps fill another critical gap on the receiving corps. As the league enters a quieter stretch, it’s a good time to evaluate how each team might leverage its draft selections, and Bleacher Report recently outlined the outlook for every first-round pick in 2026. Tate’s future with the Titans looks bright based on that analysis.
Initial role: starting wide receiver. The Titans faced several logical options at No. 4, yet they chose Carnell Tate for a clear purpose: to help develop quarterback Cam Ward, who impressed as a rookie but was hampered by a limited supporting cast and a lack of a true No. 1 target. Tate wasn’t the No. 1 option at Ohio State, though that status could have shifted if the Buckeyes had not stacked their depth with talent like Jeremiah Smith. Even as Ohio State’s No. 2 receiver behind Emeka Egbuka, Tate put up 875 yards and nine touchdowns last season. He demonstrated a strong blend of precise route-running and the ability to break open plays, traits that position him as one of the higher floors among the 2026 receiver class.
Titans coaches noticed Tate during the spring and his transition to the NFL appears to be progressing well. While he may not immediately claim the top spot on Tennessee’s depth chart, he is effectively a lock to start. It’s possible that by season’s end, Tate could establish himself as the team’s premier target. Tate’s college experience included serving as Ohio State’s second option, initially behind Emeka Egbuka and later sharing time with Jeremiah Smith over the past two seasons. Nevertheless, he accumulated close to 1,000 receiving yards, totaled nine touchdowns, and contributed as a rusher and on special teams through his college career. At the NFL level, Tate is unlikely to be relied upon for return duties or significant rushing production, but his route-running mastery and tenacity in contested catches should translate well.
Tate’s presence with the Titans will shine through his ability to create separation and make catches with defenders draped on him. The front office and coaching staff valued more than just flashes; they saw a combination of effort, raw talent, and untapped potential that aligned with Tennessee’s ongoing rebuild. While he may not be the Titans’ best receiver at the moment, the prospect of his developing into a leading target by season’s end is plausible. The selection reflects the organization’s intent to provide Ward with a reliable, high-floor pass catcher who can grow into a cornerstone piece for Tennessee’s offense.
