Supporters of Rangers have long urged the club to recruit the Scottish Premiership’s top talent, and it appears the Ibrox leadership is heeding that call this summer. Two standout performers from Hearts, Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin, were among the players who nearly helped Hearts clinch a historic league title, and both have now joined Rangers on free transfers. In addition, Rangers have appointed Derek McInnes, formerly of Tynecastle, as manager.
“I know Cammy well, and I’m fully aware of what he can bring to Rangers,” McInnes said. “His consistency has been superb for me, and he is exactly the type of player every manager wants in his squad.” Last season, Devlin led the Premiership for tackles per 90 minutes and finished second among midfielders for interceptions, second for defensive contributions, and third for recoveries. Some Rangers fans have voiced concerns about how his game translates when the team controls possession in most domestic matches, but his other metrics paint a compelling picture.
Only four Premiership midfielders registered more accurate passes per 90 minutes than Devlin in the previous campaign, and one of those four was Rangers’ own Nicolas Raskin. “He is someone who understands the Scottish league, and nothing will surprise him with what lies ahead,” McInnes remarked. “I’m looking forward to welcoming Cammy to Rangers and working with him again after he returns from his holiday.”
This strategic move aligns with Rangers’ ongoing effort to strengthen across the squad by targeting proven Scottish Premiership talent. By adding Devlin and Shankland to their ranks without transfer fees, Rangers are signaling a clear intent to boost depth, intensity, and consistency in key positions ahead of the new campaign. The acquisition of Devlin, in particular, is expected to bring a blend of tenacity, work rate, and defensive discipline to the midfield, complementing Rangers’ possession-based approach and helping the team contend for silverware on multiple fronts.
