​Before heading out on a road trip that started on Monday night with a 13-3 blowout loss to the Washington Nationals, the Colorado Rockies lost two three-game series at Coors Field. That happened after Colorado had put together a few wins and appeared to have some momentum toward challenging the San Francisco Giants for fourth place in the National League West Division.Now, though, that momentum has been dumped as the Rockies have now lost seven straight games. This is not what Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer probably wanted to see his team do entering the season’s final weeks.What is costing Colorado in win column?When looking at what is costing Colorado in the win column, it’s not the hitting so much. There is offense being created thanks to Jake McCarthy, Ezequiel Tovar, Willi Castro, Hunter Goodman, and Mickey Moniak. Let’s also not leave out what Cole Carrigg has done in his first number of games in the big leagues.But, oh man, that pitching staff is not good. Tomoyuki Sugano has been the top pitcher throughout this season, but his ERA isn’t too low. Sugano has a winning record and that does matter in the long run.The Rockies’ relievers have not been able to be consistent all season long. They have been less than stellar when coming out of the bullpen, sometimes taking a solid start by a starter and letting it run away.Toss in the fact that the team doesn’t want to have another 100-loss season this year. Right now, it is fair to say that the Rockies are going further toward that triple-digit number than away from it. Also, let’s not forget that the Rockies’ starters in the starting lineup go out and give it their best.Team should build around GoodmanGoodman is the center of the power production for Colorado. The ballclub needs to look seriously at building around him next season. Moniak just recently signed a new deal to remain with the Rockies. He, too, needs to be in the mix of players surrounding Goodman in 2027.That is, of course, if there is a 2027 MLB season and not a lockout.Nevertheless, Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes probably have something in mind before next season. What type of ballclub do they want on the field? What are the expectations of wins vs. losses next season? Can they trust the pitching staff they have now, or are they going to tear that down and start over?The biggest challenge ahead of the Rockies before this season ends? Avoid losing 100 games. They will need to start piling up more wins than losses to make sure that does not happen.
