Auburn added another talented defensive back to its 2027 recruiting class on Saturday as three-star safety James Branch committed to the Tigers over Virginia Tech and Maryland, his home-state program. Branch becomes Auburn’s 26th commitment in the 2027 cycle and the fourth from the state of Maryland, joining safety Kynair Crumb and EDGE rushers James Pace and Rion Jackson. Despite Branch’s pledge, Auburn’s recruiting ranking did not improve; they neither rose nor fell in the 247Sports rankings, remaining at No. 11 nationally for the 2027 class and ranking sixth among SEC teams. Auburn’s 2027 haul currently consists of 26 commits, divided into 10 four-stars and 16 three-stars, according to 247Sports. The Tigers’ average commitment rating stands at 88.77, contributing to an overall 247Sports score of 243.07 for the class.
Branch sits as the 20th-ranked prospect in Auburn’s class, positioned behind three-star wide receiver Cedrick Simmons but ahead of offensive lineman Jaylon Moore. He is the fifth safety to join Auburn’s program, joining Chance Gilbert, Knyair Crumb, Nasir Banks, and Preston Williams. Branch’s arrival should provide Auburn with solid safety depth for several years, and those five safeties will have the opportunity to learn under the leadership of Eric Winters, AnQuon Fegans, and Kaleb Harris, who are expected to anchor the safety room in 2027.
Here’s how Auburn’s 2027 class stacks up against its SEC peers following Branch’s commitment. In the national rankings, Texas A&M sits No. 1 with 26 commits, Texas is No. 4 with 22 commits, and Oklahoma is No. 6 with 27 commits. Florida is No. 9 with 26 commits, LSU No. 10 with 16 commits, and Auburn remains No. 11 with 26 commits. Ole Miss is No. 12 with 22 commits, Georgia No. 13 with 18 commits, Kentucky No. 21 with 25 commits, Missouri No. 27 with 19 commits, South Carolina No. 28 with 17 commits, and Arkansas No. 30 with 24 commits. Vanderbilt sits No. 32 nationally with 16 commits, Tennessee No. 43 with 16 commits, Alabama No. 50 with 13 commits, and Mississippi State No. 52 with 16 commits.
