Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables continued to navigate an unpredictable era in Norman last season. Through his first four years in Norman, Venables has endured two losing campaigns—an anomaly for Oklahoma since the 1990s. Yet, each time he has faced a setback, he has bounced back with a double-digit win season the next year. That pattern was evident last season with a 10-3 record and a berth in the College Football Playoff, a season that many viewed as a turning point for both Venables and the Sooners. The prevailing expectation now is that Oklahoma will keep building and avoid slipping back into a major downturn.
It is noteworthy, then, that USA TODAY’s Blake Toppmeyer ranked Venables as the 10th-best coach in the SEC. “Venables survived the hot seat by making the playoff,” Toppmeyer wrote. “He reasserted his defensive acumen by taking on play-calling to craft the SEC’s fiercest unit. His yo-yo tenure continued to follow a pattern, with a strong season coming after a weak one. Offensive consistency remains elusive, and he hasn’t matched the performance of predecessors Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley. With John Mateer healthy again, Venables needs to string together consecutive solid seasons to strengthen his standing at OU.”
While Venables’ career has shown flashes of inconsistency, his achievements still compare favorably with a number of coaches ranked ahead of him, including Florida’s Jon Sumrall and Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz. Venables still has work to do before he can be regarded among the SEC’s elite coaches, but his overall resume merits consideration. He has helped establish one of the nation’s top defenses, recruited at a high level, and guided Oklahoma back to the College Football Playoff during a challenging transition into the SEC.
The next crucial step is to demonstrate that last season’s success was not merely an outlier. If Venables can sustain sustained success and continue to elevate the offense, he should rise further in the SEC coaching rankings and reinforce Oklahoma’s decision to place its faith in his leadership.
