The Cincinnati Bengals enter their bye week with a winning record after a 31-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon. Cincinnati snapped a two-game losing streak, improving to 3-2 through five games and giving itself some momentum heading into the break.Joe Burrow threw four touchdown passes, while safety Jordan Battle recorded two interceptions to help the Bengals secure the win. Although Cincinnati struggled to put away a winless Miami team, the victory was important for a team looking to return to the postseason after missing the playoffs last season. With the Bengals off this week, what do their playoff chances look like?Cincinnati currently sits in the middle of a crowded AFC playoff race. According to CBS Sports’ playoff standings, the Bengals are among several 3-2 teams competing for a wild-card spot, alongside the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. The New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders currently occupy the AFC’s three wild-card positions, while the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills lead the division standings. Despite not currently holding a playoff spot, the Bengals remain firmly in the mix. Several teams around them have the same record, meaning the coming weeks could significantly reshape the standings. The projections also offer reason for optimism. Football Sports News’ playoff model gives Cincinnati a 58.7% chance of reaching the postseason, while Squawka’s model puts the Bengals at 62.2%. Football Sensei is even more optimistic, giving Cincinnati a 64.7% chance to make the playoffs. These projections differ, but all three give Cincinnati better-than-even odds of reaching the postseason. However, they’re estimates, not guarantees, and the Bengals still have plenty to prove. The offense has shown inconsistency, and the defense must continue generating takeaways to help Cincinnati compete against tougher opponents. The schedule will provide opportunities to improve its position. Cincinnati returns from the bye with a road matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 25, followed by a home game against the Tennessee Titans. With multiple AFC North matchups remaining, the Bengals have opportunities to improve their conference standing and strengthen their playoff résumé.There is still a long way to go before the wild-card round, and Cincinnati cannot afford to let its recent victory create a false sense of security. However, at 3-2, the Bengals are in a good position to control their path back to the playoffs. If they can build on the win over Miami and find consistency after the bye, a postseason return remains a realistic goal.
