Texas A&M’s quarterback history starts with Edd Hargett, who, from 1966-68, set program records in passing yards (5,379), total offense (5,411 yards), and touchdowns (40). Hargett still holds 20 school records, and to this day, he sets the standard for every future Texas A&M signal caller who hopes to even get close to his elite production.
However, while older Aggies are more familiar with Hargett, the former two-year star quarterback and A&M’s second Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel, is by far the most famous Aggie athlete outside of future Hall of Fame pass rusher Myles Garrett and Von Miller, earning the prestigious award after leading Texas A&M to an 11-2 finish and throwing for 3,706 yards and 26 touchdowns, while rushing for an incredible 1,410 yards and 21 touchdowns on 201 carries, averaging seven yards per carry.

From a recruiting perspective, Johnny Manziel was a three- to four-star prospect in the 2011 cycle, depending on the recruiting site, and nearly committed to Oregon before choosing the Aggies. Compared to the rest of the former and current Texas A&M quarterbacks, Manziel is ranked 21st in 247Sports’ All-Time Quarterback Recruits out of 33 signal callers.
Current starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who flipped from Ole Miss in the 2023 recruiting class, signed with the Aggies just a year before former head coach Jimbo Fisher was fired, and has served as the starter since midway through the 2024 season. As a recruit, Reed is the 16th-highest-rated QB to sign with Texas A&M.
Other notable names not included in the top 10 include Kenny Hill (No. 13) and Ryan Tannehill (No. 25), who was the 8th overall pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2012 NFL Draft, and memorably started at wide receiver before taking over as the starting quarterback during his final two seasons.
