​We’re down to less than a month to go in the MLB season.At this point, teams are deep in the race for playoff positioning – and the race to even make the playoffs.USA TODAY looked at teams in Wild Card position or within five games back as of Aug. 30 and compared their remaining strength of schedule by averaging their opponents’ winning percentages.Among that subset, the two toughest schedules are the top two National League Wild Card leaders.No team in the analyzed subset has a tougher remaining schedule than the Philadelphia Phillies, who were tied with the Chicago Cubs atop the National League Wild Card standings. Philadelphia’s remaining opponents average a winning percentage of .547.The Phillies will face a series against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves, then will also take on the Brewers. They then close out the season against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.At the time of writing, Philadelphia trails Atlanta by five games for the NL East lead.Next are the Cubs, whose opponents hold a .546 winning percentage on average.The Cubs’ remaining schedule includes two series against the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers and then another pair of series against the Miami Marlins, who are also in the Wild Card hunt. They’ll also face the Boston Red Sox in an interleague series to close out the regular season.Chicago is currently eight games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central, so even sweeping both series might not be enough to take the division lead.In the American League, the Baltimore Orioles hold the toughest remaining schedule among Wild Card contenders. Baltimore, which is one game out of a Wild Card spot, will face opponents with an average winning percentage of .507.The Orioles’ remaining schedule includes a four-game series against the Red Sox, then a series against the Cleveland Guardians. They’ll also face the Toronto Blue Jays, the Brewers and the New York Yankees.No other team in the AL Wild Card race has a remaining schedule with opponents above .500 on average.It’s also worth noting that the Mariners may be five games out of Wild Card position, but they hold the friendliest remaining slate by a large margin. The only teams Seattle faces with a winning record down the stretch are the Red Sox and the Houston Astros.Methodology: Current standings and remaining schedules pulled from the MLB Stats API.
