​  The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Eli Stowers with the future in mind, but the rookie tight end may have a chance to help sooner than expected.Stowers arrives in Philadelphia as one of the most intriguing athletes in the Eagles’ rookie class, bringing a rare background, high-end testing numbers, and major college production to a tight end room still led by Dallas Goedert. The Eagles do not need Stowers to become a finished product immediately after a slow start this spring, but his skill set gives the offense something worth developing as training camp approaches.The athletic profile stands out first. Stowers set the record for vertical leap at his position with a 45½-inch mark while also running a 4.51-second 40-yard dash and posting an 11-foot-3 broad jump. Those numbers suggest a player with the explosiveness to threaten defenses vertically, win above the rim, and create mismatches against linebackers and safeties. For an Eagles offense transitioning around Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, and a reworked passing game, that type of tight end could become valuable.Stowers’ path to Philadelphia was not traditional. He began his college career at Texas A&M after signing with the Aggies as a four-star quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class. He played just five games over two seasons in College Station before transferring to New Mexico State, where his position change began to produce results. Stowers caught 35 passes for 366 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for two more scores, showing the athletic traits that made him a difficult matchup once he moved closer to the formation.His career took another step when he followed Diego Pavia from New Mexico State to Vanderbilt before the 2024 season. In his first year with the Commodores, Stowers recorded 638 receiving yards and five touchdowns, earning first-team All-SEC honors. He followed that with an even better 2025 season, catching 62 passes for 769 yards and four touchdowns while again earning first-team All-SEC recognition. He was also named a unanimous All-American, won the Mackey Award, and received the Campbell Trophy, giving him one of the strongest résumés among tight ends in the draft class.The Eagles can afford to be patient because Goedert remains present at the position. Goedert is still one of the NFL’s more complete tight ends when healthy, capable of contributing as a blocker, chain-mover, and yards-after-catch threat.
