The Sporting News notes that seven teams remain in the World Cup. Eight teams entered Thursday’s first quarterfinal match still alive. France and Morocco opened the round with a 2-0 victory for France, pushing Les Bleus to their third-straight World Cup semifinal. Seven teams are still standing. Here’s who’s still in the hunt at the 2026 World Cup.

The 2-0 victory over Morocco booked France a third consecutive semifinal appearance. Norway reached its first-ever quarterfinal after an upset of Brazil in the Round of 16. Led by Erling Haaland, Norway upended Ivory Coast in a tight Round of 32 and then sealed the win over Brazil with Haaland’s two late goals. Norway will face England in the quarterfinals. England is making its third consecutive quarterfinal appearance and eyes a second semifinal in three World Cups after narrow wins over DR Congo and Mexico. England will meet Haaland and Norway in Miami. Spain has yet to concede a goal in the tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Portugal, sending Cristiano Ronaldo into World Cup retirement discussions. Belgium dominated the United States 4-1, underscoring their strong form as they head into the quarterfinals.
