The Cowboys may have a sleeping giant on their roster. 2026 could be the year this giant awakens and begins to make a bigger impact. Dallas’s tight end group, featuring Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, and Brevyn Spann-Ford, is solid, with Ferguson shouldering much of the burden. In a down year, Ferguson totaled eight touchdowns, 600 receiving yards on 82 catches. Schoonmaker added 132 receiving yards, and Spann-Ford scored once. It’s a capable trio, and they also contribute in the run game with their blocking to help set up Javonte Williams.
The numbers are respectable, but there’s room for growth, especially at the second tight end behind Ferguson. Spann-Ford, entering his third year, is poised to provide that boost. The Minnesota product stands 6’7” and 270 pounds, offering a huge target in the receiving game and evolving into one of the Cowboys’ best run blockers. It’s this blocking prowess that sets him apart. He’s a polished, powerful blocker who handles assignments from defensive tackles to edge rushers with intensity and a proven approach on film. His blocking currently surpasses Schoonmaker’s, who still has room to grow in both blocking and receiving. That edge alone could convince the Cowboys to give Spann-Ford more snaps, creating more opportunities in the passing game.
The passing game is where fans should be most excited about a potential breakout. Spann-Ford has only rare involvement but has shown flashes, such as the hurdle against the Bears. Compared to Schoonmaker, who has struggled as a receiver, Spann-Ford’s ceiling appears higher, with a frame that lends itself to contested catches and after-the-catch yards. With his blocking and receiving potential, Spann-Ford should be afforded more playing time and more chances in the pass game. If that happens, a new star could rise in Dallas.
Will Spann-Ford be a breakout player in 2026? If not him, who is your top breakout candidate?
