Why Browns’ Jared Verse is not a top-10 edge rusher in ESPN’s NFL poll

The Sporting News article Why Browns’ Jared Verse is not a top-10 edge rusher in ESPN’s NFL poll originally appeared on The Sporting News. The Browns, after trading away Myles Garrett this offseason, sent their reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who also holds the league’s single-season sack record, to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for three picks and promising young edge rusher Jared Verse. Consequently, Garrett remains the league’s top edge defender, while Verse slipped out of ESPN’s top-10 in the reaction poll.
An AFC executive explained why Verse, despite being a “beast,” isn’t currently viewed as a top-10 edge rusher. “Love Verse, but some of the other rushers higher than him have a lot more variety, whereas Verse is all power at times. But he’s only going to get better and have a great career. He’s a beast.” While it’s disappointing that Verse isn’t in the top tier right now, the rationale is straightforward: he isn’t yet a fully developed player. The new Browns edge needs a broader pass-rush repertoire, potentially incorporating more speed-rush techniques.
Verse is only 25 and has just completed his second NFL season. It’s entirely feasible that he’ll expand his pass-rushing toolkit, particularly in the speed department, as his career unfolds. After earning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2024 and earning Pro Bowl nods in each of the previous two seasons, Verse will now have to continue his development on a new team. That transition presents a challenge, as his defensive support won’t be as potent as it was in Los Angeles. He’ll have to grow in what might be a slightly less favorable environment. It won’t be easy, but as Garrett demonstrated, it is possible to thrive as an edge rusher in Cleveland.
If Verse can keep progressing, much as he did when his rookie-year sack total rose from 4.5 to 7.5 this past season, he could crack the top-10 by 2027. The Browns traded away the league’s top-rated edge rusher to acquire Verse—a first-round pick in 2027, a second-round pick in 2028, and a third-round pick in 2029. Should Verse rise into the top-10 and elevate his ranking in the ensuing years, the trade could ultimately look vindicated for Cleveland, even if Garrett remains among the NFL’s best defenders today.
Additional context in the broader NFL world includes discussions about Denver’s signing of J.K. Dobbins drawing criticism from ESPN analysts, questions about how the 49ers might have resolved Brandon Aiyuk issues without trades or releases, and comparisons placing Falcons running back Bijan Robinson higher than Lions’ Jaymir Gibbs in ESPN’s rankings for the sake of search optimization. The overall picture remains that Verse’s career arc is just beginning, and the coming seasons will determine whether the Browns’ bold move pays off in the long run. The Sporting News will continue to follow Verse’s development as he works to add more speed-oriented moves to his repertoire and aim for a sustained top-10 edge rusher status in the NFL.
