​Every training camp produces a handful of surprise standouts, and for the Los Angeles Chargers, undrafted rookie wide receiver Devonte Ross has the tools to become one of this year’s biggest camp success stories.Although Ross wasn’t selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, his collegiate production suggests he has the ability to outperform his draft status. After beginning his career at Kentucky, Ross broke out during a three-year stint at Troy, where he developed into one of the Sun Belt Conference’s top playmakers. His 2024 campaign was particularly impressive, as he totaled 76 receptions for 1,043 yards and 11 touchdowns while earning First-Team All-Sun Belt honors.Ross transferred to Penn State for his final collegiate season, where he faced tougher competition and still proved capable of stretching defenses vertically. He finished with 36 receptions for 501 yards and five touchdowns while averaging nearly 15 yards per catch. More importantly, he showcased his reliable hands, recording just one drop throughout the season while continuing to generate explosive plays after the catch.Those traits could make him an intriguing fit in offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s system. Ross has the speed to threaten defenses deep, but he also possesses the quickness to create separation underneath and turn short receptions into significant gains. His ability to line up in multiple spots could help him carve out a role during camp as the Bolts evaluate the back end of their receiving corps.However, Ross’ clearest path to a roster spot may come on special teams. Throughout his college career, he contributed as both a punt and kick returner, giving him valuable versatility. For an undrafted rookie trying to secure a roster spot, the ability to contribute in multiple phases often becomes the deciding factor.Training camp will also provide Ross with an opportunity to build chemistry with the Chargers’ quarterbacks while proving he can consistently create separation against NFL-caliber defensive backs. At five-foot-nine, he doesn’t possess prototypical size, but his acceleration, route-running ability and explosiveness have allowed him to produce at every stop throughout his college career.The Chargers’ wide receiver room features established talent, but there are still opportunities for younger players to emerge. Every year, undrafted free agents force their way into roster conversations by making plays during practices and preseason games, and Ross has the skill set to do exactly that.If he can translate his collegiate production to the professional level, continue making plays down the field and provide consistent value as a return specialist, Ross could quickly become one of the biggest surprises of training camp. While making the initial 53-man roster won’t be easy, don’t be surprised if the 23-year-old turns heads throughout the summer and gives the Bolts a difficult roster decision heading into the regular season.
