Ole Miss Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is the best player in college football after a near flawless performance against LSU. Throwing for 363 yards and leading a fourth-quarter clinching touchdown drive after LSU had tied the game at 24, he is the real deal. The 32-24 win was the second-most watched game this year (11 million viewers). Not bad for two teams from southern states with a total population of maybe 8 million people. The wildcard – LSU coach Benedict Arnold Kiffin, who played the “traitor” role so well, returning to his old stomping grounds. It was must see TV and naturally yours truly was pleased to experience that surreal environment live. While justice prevailed here, if these teams meet again, LSU would be my pick to emerge victorious as they never wilted in a hostile atmosphere and simply are more talented. Can coaches tell time? What happened in Nashville last week is so egregious coaches should get fired. NC State led Vandy 31-28 and faced a fourth down from their own five yard line with six seconds left. The Wolfpack decided not to punt from their end zone and instead have quarterback CJ Bailey run down the clock and allow himself to be tackled for a safety which would have meant nothing in an inevitable 31-30 win. Problem was Bailey scrambled in the end zone and instead of falling down, fumbled and saw Vandy recover for a game-clinching touchdown. That 34-31 win cannot happen. Bailey should have been given strict instructions to run towards the back of the end zone away from contact and merely step out of bounds when any defensive player got close to him. That strategy would have translated into the aforementioned worthless two-point safety and game-over, NC State wins. Just another example of a coach who does not understand clock management and when it comes to knowing the score. Even the best head coaches are not educated in clock management. For NC State coach Dave Doeren, whose total compensation is around $6 million this year, be an innovator and create a clock management position, fill it with me and never lose another game this way again. I guarantee it. Just ask Miami coach Mario Cristobal, who learned the hard way the clock stops on an incomplete pass two years ago against Georgia Tech. I’m still waiting to answer the call.Prime’s time appears overDeion Sanders is not only no longer prime time but now irrelevant. After an opening 14-13 victory over Georgia Tech, Sanders had a lot to say about his team and the naysayers. But losing to Northwestern 41-7, they’ve been exposed. Worse, the Buffalos are in disarray with Sanders acknowledging dismissing players from the team. As we told you earlier, Sanders may not make it through the season.Recycling old coaches rarely worksKentucky coach Will Stein’s 31-21 signature victory over Texas A&M at College Station was a stunner — for both teams. Wasn’t Aggies coach Mike Elko hired from Duke to fix the mess Jimbo Fisher left? The guy is 8-5 in his first season,
