Minnesota swung a trade for Quinn Hughes with the Vancouver Canucks that massively transformed the team. The Wild were among the best teams in the Western Conference in 2025-26. And they proved as much by making the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.The Wild took on the Dallas Stars in the first round of the playoffs. These two franchises are linked through history, both on the ice and off it. In this latest meeting, though, it was Minnesota who skated to a series win, taking Dallas down in six games.Unfortunately, the run stopped in round two. Minnesota took on the Colorado Avalanche in its second-round matchup. The Avalanche were the best team in the regular season. They didn’t make many major splashes, but they did bolster their depth for the upcoming season. The Wild swung a trade with the Calgary Flames that landed winger Blake Coleman and defenseman Olli Maatta. To this point, this is the most notable move the Wild have made.Minnesota is always looking to make the bold move, though. With the 2026-27 season quickly approaching, the time to make that move is right now. Their depth down the middle is solid, but lacks a star at the top of the lineup. Minnesota has been connected to some of the biggest names on the trade market, but to no avail.One name they were connected to was Vincent Trocheck. He was on the block as the New York Rangers proceeded with their retooling process. After months of rumors, he was sent to the Utah Mammoth back on July 1.Of course, one cannot mention the Wild and their center search without bringing up Dylan Larkin. The Detroit Red Wings captain wants out of the Motor City. He has requested a trade, though that request remains unfulfilled at this time.That trade request will likely remain unfulfilled for some time, as well. The Red Wings are currently on the lookout for a new general manager. Steve Yzerman was removed from the role in mid-July as the team recorded its 10th season without playoff hockey.This leaves the Wild in a bit of a difficult spot. Minnesota needs an upgrade down the middle of the ice. They need someone who can play the tough minutes without being overwhelmed. The players that fit that bill are already few and far between. Now they have seemingly missed their chance to acquire two of the top candidates on the trade market.There are certainly forces outside of their control at play,
