Wilson sees Open Last-Chance as huge opportunity

As Andrew Wilson left Dundonald Links last Tuesday, his Open dreams lay shattered after he slipped up on the final holes during Final Qualifying. With five spots available in a 72-player field, Wilson finished in sixth place—one spot and one shot outside earning a place at Royal Birkdale. In years past, that would have effectively ended his chances and left the Darlington native to wrestle with “what if.” But the story takes a turn this week: on Monday, Wilson will line up at Birkdale as one of 12 players contending for the last available berth in The Open through the inaugural Last-Chance Qualifier.
The odds aren’t in his favor, yet the potential payoff is immense. “When I messed up, I forgot all about this until I got an email about it,” Wilson told BBC Sport. “I’ve got nothing to lose. I could qualify on Monday, then post four solid rounds in the main event, which could kick-start my season. Having an opportunity like this is awesome.”
This marks The Open’s first foray into a Last-Chance Qualifier—a chance for 12 players to seize the final 156th spot in golf’s oldest major. The field is a mix of Tour professionals and top amateurs who narrowly missed other qualifying routes or exemptions, all hoping to grab that last ticket to The Open.
As the game’s biggest stars start to arrive at Royal Birkdale, these 12 will tee off at 07:30 BST on Monday, playing on the actual links in four three-ball groups, with the 18-hole stroke play competition determining the winner who will then join the Open field three days later. The event will be televised and is part of a broader set of new measures introduced by The R&A to heighten spectator engagement in the early Open week, before the main competition heat begins.
The Last-Chance Qualifier is accompanied by other Open-week novelties, including the Heroes Classic on Tuesday. This event, a Texas Scramble three-hole format, features world number one and defending champion Scottie Scheffler, along with other top professionals, Women’s Open Champion Miyu Yamashita, G4D Open Champion Brendan Lawlor, and other prominent sports and entertainment figures. The R&A hopes to turn the 154th Open into a full-fledged festival of golf, with The Heroes Classic and the Last-Chance Qualifier helping to broaden the appeal of the week.
The field for the Last-Chance Qualifier includes Wesley Bryan from the United States, along with Andrew Wilson (England), Aldrich Potgieter (South Africa), Matti Schmid (Germany), Adri Arnaus (Spain), Joe Dean (England), Matt Moloney (England), Sam Easterbrook (England), John Gough (England), Angel Hidalgo (Spain), Charles Huntzinger (United States), and Frazer Jones (England). Wilson is set to reach Royal Birkdale over the weekend and will use the opportunity to practice on the course ahead of Monday’s qualifier, playing under full tournament conditions to glimpse the challenge that awaits.
The 32-year-old’s objective is simple: secure a spot in The Open and test himself on the world’s biggest stages. He will enter the Last-Chance Qualifier with a clear mindset—no pressure, just the chance to claim a coveted place at Royal Birkdale and launch a breakthrough run in the Open.
Wilson’s preparation will be thorough, with a final chance to calibrate his game on the actual course before the Monday qualifier. He will be aiming to deliver four strong rounds should he advance, hoping the performance can catalyze a more successful stretch of form for the 2026 Open season. The outcome remains uncertain, but the opportunity is significant, and Wilson is keen to seize whatever he can from this rare, high-stakes opportunity at The Open.
