Wilson Memorial swept Monticello in the Region 3C volleyball tournament quarterfinals Nov. 4. Wilson won 25-12, 25-18, 25-19. The No. 4 seeded Hornets now travel to No. 1 Turner Ashby Nov. 9 for a semifinal battle. The two teams met twice this season with Turner Ashby winning in Fishersville in August and Wilson beating Turner Ashby in five sets in mid-September in Bridgewater. “It’s an exciting game,” said Wilson senior Bree Kindig of playing Turner Ashby. “It’s going to be a tough game.”No. 2 Western Albemarle will host No. 3 Alleghany in the other semifinal match. Western topped Harrisonburg and Alleghany beat Spotswood. Kindig finished with 28 digs for Wilson in the win, while Estee Irving had 12 kills and 14 digs. Natalee Chandler added 16 assists for the Hornets and Maddie Lawhorn had 12 assists and seven kills. Harper Tibbs added seven kills. “We lost some momentum in the second set,” said Wilson coach Lauren Grove. “We kind of lost our scrappiness, but we came back and swung momentum our way and just kept rolling with it.” Grove said Monticello forced her team out of system several times on the night, making Wilson have to scramble on offense to get the ball back over the net. That kept some of Wilson’s big hitters from getting swings.”The best thing for our team is we don’t have to rely on one player,” she said. “AJ (Hedrick) stepped it a lot there in the third set. She ended up having eight kills (in the match) and I don’t think she had any in that first set. She came out swinging. Estee was consistent. It’s just nice we have versatility.”Kindig said it was good to get the win, but she doesn’t think they played at the level that they wanted to. “We started off slow,” she said. “I know we can do better, we all know we can do better.”They’ll get a chance to prove that Monday night against Turner Ashby.
