Winks: Leicester City midfielder on the verge of joining Cagliari

Several Italian outlets are reporting that Harry Winks, the Leicester City midfielder, could be returning to Serie A for the 2026-27 season, this time with Cagliari. The 30-year-old English midfielder is understood to be heading to Cagliari on a permanent transfer from Leicester City, as talks progress toward a full agreement.
Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio indicates that a deal between Winks and Cagliari is already in place, with Alfredo Pedullà, who first floated the negotiations a couple of weeks ago, suggesting the Sardinian club is edging closer to finalizing terms with the Foxes. The news situates Winks as a strategic replacement for Gianluca Gaetano, who was recently confirmed as a new signing for Atalanta, reinforcing Cagliari’s plans to bolster their squad for the coming campaign.
Winks has prior Serie A experience from the 2022-23 season, when he made 20 appearances for Sampdoria. The English midfielder began his senior career with Tottenham, eventually establishing himself in the Premier League, where he has produced two goals across 150 league appearances. Since 2023, Winks has been with Leicester City, a club that faced relegation to the English Football League One after last season’s campaign.
In contrast to Winks’ potential move, Cagliari has just secured survival in Serie A with one game to spare at the end of the 2025-26 season, underscoring the club’s intent to strengthen their squad as they aim to maintain top-flight status in the near future. The proposed transfer would mark a return to Serie A for Winks, who previously showcased his talents in Italian football and would bring a wealth of Premier League experience to the Sardinian club.
Leicester City, who signed Winks in 2023, have navigated a challenging period that culminated in relegation, prompting questions about squad reshaping and future moves. If the Winks-to-Cagliari deal goes through, it would represent a notable consolidation for Cagliari as they prepare for the 2026-27 season, while offering Winks an opportunity to continue competing at a high level in Italy.
For fans and followers tracking transfer activity, this potential move remains one to watch as early talks progress toward a formal agreement. As the January and summer windows approach, Winks’ availability and Cagliari’s readiness to finalize terms will be central to the unfolding narrative surrounding this possible Serie A reunion.
