WooSox can sell patch rights on jerseys to local partners in 2027

WORCESTER — The Worcester Red Sox’ jerseys will look a little different next year.Starting in 2027, the WooSox, along with every team in Minor League Baseball, will be able to purchase their patch rights from the league and sell them to a local partner.“Being able to control that is going be really great for us,” said Jack Verducci, executive vice president of corporate partnerships and ticket sales for the Worcester Red Sox. “It’s also probably the coolest piece of inventory we’ve had to put a partner on since really opening the ballpark. So, it’s exciting.”Major League Baseball rolled out the same option to teams in 2022. The Boston Red Sox and Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company entered a 10-year, $170 million partnership to have MassMutual become the signature sponsor on Red Sox uniforms starting in 2023, according to MLB.com.Now, Minor League Baseball is following suit. After the league sold the patch to USAA for a 250th promotion this year, MiLB teams – like the WooSox – can opt into a program that allows them to sell the jersey patch to a partner at the local level next season.“One of the things we’ve intentionally tried very hard to do is to keep Polar Park local,” Verducci said. “You don’t see a bunch of Fortune 500 companies that could theoretically be in every ballpark. Like, they are Worcester, Central Mass. companies for the most part. So, to have a jersey sleeve partner that represents Worcester is something that I think is great, versus just a generic big company across the league.”MiLB clubs can make sponsorship patch deals with partners for up to four years, according to Verducci, and sell different jerseys to different partners – like home, away and alternate uniforms.Worcester has blue, red, white and gray jerseys (and a bunch of alternates).“Being able to get a marquee piece of inventory for the first time, that we’ll have complete control over, is something that’s really exciting for us,” Verducci told the T&G. “It’s a really great opportunity for us and a brand to come together to own a piece of real estate that’s throughout the city. It’ll also be on all the jerseys sold at retail in our team store.“So, we’re excited to hopefully see people walk around with our WooSox jerseys, but also with a partner brand as well.”Full terms and details for patch partnershipJersey patch rights are available beginning with the 2027 season through the 2030 season, and all rights apply to regular-season and championship games. Patches can be on either sleeve, centered and 2 inches above the sleeve end. The maximum size is 4 inches by 4 inches, and shape is flexible (square, circle, rectangle or custom shape).Minor league clubs are responsible for affixing patches and handling production costs.—Contact Tommy Cassell at tcassell@telegram.com.
