Mexican supporters’ FIFA World Cup festivities in Cabo San Lucas have been overshadowed by a disturbing incident after a motorist drove through a gathering of fans celebrating Mexico’s victory over Czechia.

Wednesday saw Mexico maintain its perfect record at the World Cup following a 3-0 win against Czechia at the Estadio Azteca, with second-half goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones, and Alvaro Fidalgo clinching the three points. The match also featured World Cup stalwart Guillermo Ochoa making what is expected to be his last appearance at the competition.
Yet the victory was tarnished by the disturbing events that transpired in Cabo San Lucas after El Tri’s success. Shortly after 9pm, an unknown motorist encountered a substantial gathering celebrating Mexico’s triumph on Lazaro Cardenas Boulevard, as per The Mirror US. The festivities quickly turned devastating when the motorist accelerated through the crowd that had obstructed their route.

“According to preliminary information, the vehicle was surrounded by a crowd and, due to circumstances to be determined by the competent authorities, moved forward through the throng, injuring several individuals,” Cabo San Lucas officials stated in a Facebook announcement.
“Emergency protocols were immediately activated. Personnel from Public Security, Municipal Traffic, the Fire Department, Civil Protection, and medical services responded to the scene to secure the area, provide pre-hospital care, and transport the injured to various hospitals.”
Officials also confirmed that, at the time of reporting, 17 individuals received medical attention, one of whom was undergoing emergency treatment. Following the incident, the driver was apprehended by law enforcement and transported to hospital.

Dr. Jose Manuel Larumbe Pineda, First Councilor Acting Municipal President for the Ministry of Law, stated: “I want to express our deep solidarity with the affected people and their families for the unfortunate events that occurred tonight.
“Our commitment is to guarantee care for victims, provide companionship to their families, fully cooperate with authorities and keep citizens informed with official and verified data.”
No charges have yet been brought against the driver, as authorities continue their investigation into the incident. The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office has since announced the launch of a formal investigation, according to the NY Post.
The incident follows a similar incident last week in Chihuahua City, with the El Paso Times reporting that a pickup truck driver plowed into a crowd of fans celebrating Mexico’s victory over South Korea.

Earlier this week, Chihuahua State Public Safety Secretary Gilberto Loya stated: “We are looking to prevent lamentable acts such as occurred in the last game when a person was run over during these festivities.”

Having topped Group A, Mexico is set to take on Scotland in the Round of 32, with a potential game against England awaiting should they advance. However, Scotland’s path to that fixture is far from certain following their 3-0 defeat to Brazil on Wednesday.
Currently sitting in 7th place among the third-placed teams, Scotland holds a one-point advantage over Cape Verde to secure a knockout stage berth. With every team ranked below them still having a game remaining, Steve Clarke’s squad faces a nervy wait to discover whether they will earn the right to face Mexico at the Azteca.
